At a height of 1,035 m, Chamonix is located in the heart of the northern Alps at the intersection of France, Italy and Switzerland. The Mont Blanc ( 4 807m) , the highest moutain in Europ dominates the entire valley , along with the Aiguille du Gouter, the Aiguille du Midi, the Vertes, the Drus and Aiguille Rouge. The famous Vallée Blanche with its 20 km run over the glacier "La mer de Glace" is world famous and an unforgetable experience.
The Chamonix valley is home to 13,916 permanent inhabitants, which are divided as follows amongst the various villages : Servoz (942), Les Houches ( 3,037), Chamonix and Argentière (9,514) and Vallorcine ( 423).
Argentière is considered one of the foremost Alpine ski resorts due to its altitude ( 3,300 m), its north facing slopes and the powder fields of the Grands Montets ski area.
Near to the centre of Chamonix, Le Brévent is a large area with pistes of all levels. It is linked to the area of La Flégère by cable car, that also offers great off-piste opportunities for powder lovers.
