The Rhone / French Alps / Haute-Savoie region
Chamonix is at the heart of Western Europe in the french Alps, very close to Mt. Dolent where the french, swiss and italian borders meet.
Chamonix is probably best known as the skiing and alpine capital of the world. As a destination it has a reputation for the extreme and this, whilst undoubtedly true, can mask a wide array of sporting and leisure activities (particularly in summer), peace and quiet, great nightlife, and superb scenery that can be enjoyed at whichever pace suits you. Chamonix is the perfect place to come for a week's holiday, a season, or a lifetime, as you will never run out of things to do or tire of the views!
The lively streets of Chamonix are a colourful mix of sport shops, guide offices, restaurants, bars and cafés. Every Saturday the town hosts an outdoor market brimming with local crafts and produce. On bad weather days there is a cinema, a bowling alley, an ice rink, a large sports centre with a pool, gym and indoor climbing wall and numerous museums in which to while away the day.
Situated in the Haute-Savoie region of France, Chamonix is bordered by Switzerland and Italy and dominated by the incredible Aiguilles de Chamonix mountain chain which peaks at the top of Mont Blanc (4810m) - the highest in Western Europe. The local population of Chamonix numbers around 10 000 inhabitants but this figure swells to nearly ten times that with the influx of tourists, climbers, alpinists, backpackers, students and seasonnaires. There are two distinct seasons here: summer and winter, but the area is busy for most of the year with different activities at the fore-front of people's minds.
Whilst the principal town is of the same name, 'Chamonix' is often used in reference to the whole valley, stretching over 28km from Le Fayet to Switzerland. It is, however, made up of several distinct and charming villages including Servoz, Les Houches, Les Bossons, Les Praz, Les Tines, Argentiere, Montroc, and at the top of the valley: Le Tour.
Chamonix / Les Gaillands area
Chalet Les Vernays is located in a very pretty and quiet part of chamonix very close to the Gaillands lake and climbing wall. The woods are nearby also so it a great place to begin the many walks and trails of the valley. The town centre is about 10 minutes walk and there are some traditional bars and restaurants very close to the chalet.
Something outdoors and active
If you fancy action packed weekend full of high adrenaline adventure sports then once again, Chamonix has it all on offer. Whether you're just having a long weekend away with the guys or gals, a break from the normal daily routines; or if it's your stag/hen weekend and want to do something sporty then there's plenty of exciting activities to keep you entertained. In the summer Chamonix has a lively activities programme offering the many adventure sports including :hydro speeding, canoeing, white water rafting, paragliding or a leisurely round of golf. If you want to head into the mountains, Chamonix's summer activities include mountain biking, rock climbing and abseiling. (If you prefer, you could take a lesson at one of the indoor climbing walls in either Les Houches or Chamonix or the outdoor one in Les Gaillands - 1 minute from the Chalet)
Local Events and Festivals
There are plenty of festivals going on all year-round in Chamonix; the variety of the events is one of the town’s best assets. During the summer months of June, July and August, sporting and musical events such as the Fete de Musique, the International Climbing Championships and the Fete de Guides the take centre stage. July 14th is Bastille Day in France, and there's often some superb firework displays going on around the valley. More traditional mountain events and fairs start in August and continue through September and October. Check out our what’s on calendar for all the latest information on all the fairs, Christmas markets, exhibitions, and sporting events organised in the villages and resorts around Chamonix.
