The Rhone / French Alps / Haute-Savoie region

Chamonix is probably best known as the skiing and alpine capital of the world. As a destination it has a reputation for the extreme and this, whilst undoubtedly true, can mask a wide array of sporting and leisure activities (particularly in summer), peace and quiet, great night-life, and superb scenery that can be enjoyed at whichever pace suits you. Chamonix is the perfect place to come for a weekend break or a week's holiday. In fact there is so much to do out here many people decide not to go back!
The town is at the foot of Mont-Blanc and following introduction of skiing in the early 1900s Chamonix hosted the first winter Olympic Games in 1924.
The Chamonix / Argentiere area
Argentière is located near the head of the valley of Chamonix approximately 7km from Chamonix town. It is connected by road with Switzerland by the pass over the Col des Montets, and the Col de la Forclaz to Martigny in the Rhône valley. The village also lies on the route of the incredibly scenic Mont Blanc Express railroad which runs from St Gervais / Le Fayet through Chamonix, Argentiere and Vallorcine before crossing the Franco/Swiss border at Chatelard, passing through Finhaut before reaching the 'end of the line' in Martingy.
During your holiday if you prefer to stay in a village with a more laid back atmosphere Argentiere (1250m) is a great choice. It’s the biggest village in the valley, next to Chamonix, and is considered one of the foremost alpine ski resorts due to its location at the foot of Les Grands Montets ski resort. It has a great character of its own, with brightly coloured buildings, lively bars and restaurants.
In the winter visitors pick this town to stay in as you can walk directly to the Grand Montets ski lifts and if you are up early enough for the first lifts experience deep untouched powder! There is a fun ski school for small children, The Panda Ski Club, which is popular for skiing families. Argentière is the starting point for the Telepherique du Lognon cable car up to Les Grands Montets (3,295m), a skiing area famous for its steep and demanding slopes, both on-piste as well as off-piste. In total, the skiing area is served by 1 cable car (2 sections), 1 gondola, 5 chair-lifts and some ski lifts.
In the summer Argentiere offers access to walking trails like the Petit Balcon Sud, see our hiking and trekking section for some ideas, or sightseeing on the Glacier d'Argentiere, where you can see spectacular ice waves on the receding glacier. It also has a tennis and squash centre.
Chamonix is best known for its extreme skiing, climbing, high mountain hiking and mountain biking. This busy alpine village is extremely popular in the winter and summer seasons with tourists clambering for a glimpse of Mont Blanc.
CHAMONIX: Chamonix has all the facilities of a town; with a great variety of shops, restaurants and bars, cinema, museums, sports centre, ice-skating, tennis, squash, swimming pools and a very good 18 hole golf course.
There are fabulous walking and running trails all over the valley, some are world famous and every year Chamonix hosts the ultimate 'Ultra Trail' covering over 154km in August. For hikers this trail is known as Le Tour du Mont Blanc (5+ day walking trip).
The climbing is spectacular with the highlight being the annual Climbing World Championships in July. Mountain biking is very popular for both cross-country and down-hilling trails and the golf course in Chamonix is of a very high standard with excellent facilities. During the summer the alpine rivers swell from the mountain snow and the white water activities really come into their own.
SKIING: Chamonix provides skiing for all abilities with nursery slopes at Les Planards, Les Chosalets as well great ski schools at all the ski resorts. However, Chamonix is ideal for the intermediate and advanced skier. The intermediate runs boast excellent groomed pistes, trails and mogul fields. For the expert skier there is limitless off piste skiing and some of the steepest and most challenging runs in the Alps including the awe-inspiring 22km ski down the Vallée Blanche on the Mer de Glace with a mountain guide.
The skiing in the Chamonix Valley is spread over 5 separate areas which are linked by a regular and efficient bus service included in the lift pass. At the base of the Valley is Les Houches. From the Chamonix centre Le Brévent which is linked to La Flégère. Up the Valley is Les Grands Montets at Argentière and finally Le Tour.
As the Valley cuts through the highest mountains in Europe, the skiing in Chamonix has a reputation for being among the best available. This reputation is built on the fact that Chamonix Mont Blanc has the world's biggest skiable vertical drop that is served by lifts (2807m). It also boasts one of the world's longest runs - 22 km through the Vallée Blanche - and staged the World's first Winter Olympics in 1924.

| Nearest Travel Links | |
| Airport: | Geneva |
| Railway: | Chamonix/ Argentiere |
| Ferry: | Calais |
Our recommendation is that you fly to Geneva airport it is only 50 miles to Chamonix and takes little more than an hour. Then it is a further 15 minutes by car to Argentiere. You may choose to hire a car or arrange a transfer. There are many transfer providers, we work with the best and most reliable and are very happy to help arrange transfers directly from the airport to the apartment for you.
You may choose to travel by train or public bus from the airport although these means do not save you much money, the journey takes much longer and you still have to find your own way to the property once you reach Chamonix.
If you are driving, then from Calais the journey is around 550 miles and with minimal breaks the good motorways will see you in Chamonix in around 9 hours.
