The Rhone / French Alps / Haute-Savoie region

The Chamonix Valley (www.chamonix.net)

Les Houches is one hour drive from Geneva by Autoroute. Geneva airport is served by numerous scheduled airlines. You can leave the UK in the morning and be on the slopes before mid-day. Situated at the foot of Mont Blanc, Europe's highest summit, the views from the Chamonix Valley are amazing. There are at least 8 different ski areas within 20 minutes drive, catering for all levels of ability.

Chamonix does not have the limitations of many purpose built ski resorts. The choice of ski areas is vast and the variation in terrain and conditions means all ability levels of both skiers and boarders can have a great holiday. The town itself has great restaurants and nightlife, a casino and boutique shopping.

You can also ice-climb, paraglide, cross-country ski, snowshoe, dog-sled, take a helicopter flight, ice-skate and swim. For walkers there are 17 km of specially designed footpaths. The highest cable car in Europe, the Aiguille du Midi, takes you up to Mont Blanc itself.

The Italian resort of Courmayeur is half an hour away through the Mt Blanc tunnel. If the weather isnt great in France its normally fine in Courmayeur. Courmayeur is great for all abilities, has great food and good off-piste. You can get to Turin to see Juventus in another hour.

Verbier in Switzerland is 60 minutes drive away on one of the great driving roads in Europe. It has a massive ski area, gourmet restaurants and exclusive bars. Verbier's apres-ski is world famous.

St Gervais and Megeve are 20 minutes away by car and offer great skiing and boarding for families, intermediates and off piste. Megeve has 8 of the top ten ski restaurants in the world.

The resort of Contamines is close by, it has spectacular views of Mt Blanc and amazing off-piste. It is slightly off the beaten track so fresh powder can be found almost all the time.

Flaine is 45 minutes away and offers some spectacular high altitude skiing, and slightly further afield, the Portes Du Soleil region (Morzine/Avoriaz) is a massive area on the France/Switzerland border. You will never be short of terrain to explore in and around Les Houches.

Chamonix / Les Houches area

Les Houches is a traditional alpine village with all the facilities you need in a ski holiday but which has retained its Savoyarde individuality. The village has a relaxed feel to it with a wide choice of restaurants and bars. There is a cafe bar 100 metres from the Apartment with SkySports and free wi-fi. For serious nightlife, head for Chamonix, just a 5 minute drive away. There are two supermarkets in the village and a patisserie, tabac and cafe bar next door to the Apartment.

Offering one of the most varied ski areas in the Chamonix Valley, Les Houches is suitable for all levels, whether beginner, intermediate or advanced. Les Houches is the location for regular international Ski World Cup events and serves as the training ground of the French National Ski Team and L'Ecole du Ski Francais (ESF). The varied choice of pistes offers downhill, cross-county, snowboarding, telemark and ski jumping, as well as off-piste for the more adventurous. The resort has 18 lifts and 86 snow cannons. Skiing in Les Houches combines long descents through pine forests with spectacular views of the Mont Blanc ranges. The tree-lined pistes mean that you can ski even when the weather closes in. There are plans to link Les Houches to St Gervais and when that happens it will open up a huge new area on the doorstep. (www.leshouches.com)

How to get there

AboutMyPlace

Situated less than 1 hour from Geneva airport, Les Houches is easily accessible by car or train, with numerous private shuttle services operating between Geneva airport and Chamonix valley. Monarch, Easyjet, BMIbaby and Jet2 all fly into Geneva.

It is worth hiring a car to get around the valley as its easier and saves time, although its not needed if you plan to stay in Les Houches. There are numerous car rental agencies available at Geneva airport. It takes an hour to get to Chamonix. We recommend that you hire a vehicle from the Swiss side of Geneva Airport. This allows the Swiss motorway system to be used without further charge and provides the fastest transfer to Les Houches.

You can also get a scheduled bus or minibus service to Les Houches. We recommend calling Jason at AlpEscape who has provided a great door to door service for many of our guests. You can get a train from Geneva but you need to change in St Gervais and as a result the journey is slower than the minibus services which drop you at the door at no extra cost.

Trains are available but you need to change in St Gervais and as a result the journey is slower than the minibus services which drop you at the door at no extra cost.
