A 1 bedroom cottage renovated 2012 in the small hamlet of Marmouret, within the commune of Tardes. Whilst the original oak beams and bread oven have been left exposed, the quality accommodation is modern and spacious. The house is set in the heart of the countryside, 10 minutes drive from the village of Chambon sur Voueize with local shops, supermarket, bank, post office, pharmacy, petrol, a weekly market and the 11th century abbey church of St Valerie. The quiet country lanes around the property make it ideal for walkers and cyclists. The open view and big, ever changing sky will doubtless provide a source of inspiration for those with a creative disposition.

The Limousin region
The three departments of Correze, Creuse & Haute Vienne make up the Limousin region which is situated largely on the Massif Central. It is one of the lowest populated regions in France with some of the least spoilt countryside in Europe. The A20 motorway cuts through the centre of the region providing excellent links to Paris to the north & south to Toulouse.
The region is rich in history - Limoges the famous porcelain centre and birthplace of Renoir; Bourganeuf an important centre for the Knights Templar; La Souteraine was a stopover on the pilgrims route St Jacques de Compostella; Richard the Lionheart was fatally wounded at Chalus; Aubusson a designated UNESCO site with its tapestries; Crozant & Fresslines were favourite haunts of many artists, including Monet. The memorial town of Oradour sur Glane where 642 inhabitants were massacred in WWII.
The region is well known for the high quality of its waterand offers 1st rate fishing. Major rivers passing through the Limousin region include the Dordogne, Vienne, Creuse and Cher. The area is known as the "Land of a thousand lakes" - wherever you are, you are never far from one! Whether its Lac de Vassiviere , the largest man made lake in France, with its beaches, walks, tree top assault course & water sports or one of the other lakes nearby at Gueret and La Souteraine with beaches and lifeguards.
There are various fishing lakes, including a fishing school in Betete. The Etang des Landes nature reserve is close to our property.
Food is important in this region too [well it is France!] The pate de pomme de terre is a Limousin speciality & Clafoutis is a local dessert.
Gueret, the regional capital, is 50km away. Here you will find larger supermarkets & small shops in the pedestrianised centre. Also a botanic garden, art & archaeological museums. Close by are the wolf sanctuary of Chabrieres and the Labyrinthe Geante.
Montlucon [45km] has an olympic size swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi and outside pool for summer use. A swimming pool, sauna, steam bath & gym are available in the nearby thermal spa town of Evaux les Bains [16km].
The UNESCO site of Aubusson and its tapestry is 35km away.
All in all, something for everybody. Whether you want to relax or exercise, culture, history and nature are on our doorstep.

"Superb facilities, utter peace, fabulous views - brilliant!"
We were sorry to leave after two perfect weeks in this gite; In addition to a comfortable bed, good quality linens, well equipped kitchen, light and airy decor, Elaine and Martin have provided lots of thoughtful touches - eg: bath robes, picnic hamper, generous breakfast basket, including home made jams, on arrival, a good selection of books, CDs, DVDs, lots of information about the area, comfortable indoor and outdoor seating, etc. The views are lovely, the setting is utterly peaceful, and the area has lots of excellent and well marked walks. Elaine and Martin are welcoming, friendly, helpful hosts and the very positive reviews are entirely justified. (The steep open stairs might be difficult for a small child or person with mobility problems but we had no problem with them.) We arrived in chilly weather but there is good heating, including in the bathroom. Then a heatwave came, and the house was comfortably cool. - HIGHLY recommended, an ideal base to explore this lovely area..
Thank you for your kind comments. It was a pleasure to meet you and hopefully you will stay with us again in the future.

"The real France...."
This gite is one of the best we have ever stayed in, the cleanliness and thoughtful provision of everything required was a credit to Martin and Elaine. The views are far better than the photos would suggest and the hot tub has been changed to a wooden model which has to be heated by a fire (logs provided). The bed is very comfortable and the walk in shower excellent. At present there is no door between the bedroom and bathroom so ultra modest couples beware! However, all you have to do is to ensure your partner is downstairs.... When we arrived and expressed surprise that the internet access was not wifi, Martin and Elaine went out and bought a hub so by Tuesday we were connected. This is a measure of the kind of hosts they are - absolutely nothing is too much trouble from the very generous breakfast pack to the excellent house file and the superb condition of all the fixtures and fittings. Coupled with a beautiful rural setting (think a gentle Dordogne without the Brits and the prices) and you have a brilliant holiday home, peaceful but near a small town with all the services you need. And, as my husband says, an excellent satellite TV and huge collection of DVDs to enhance evenings in with a bottle or two of wine (especially when Wimbledon's on!)
Thank you very much for your positive comments. It was indeed a pleasure to meet you. We are looking at ways to install a door on the opening to the bathroom(that we inherited) and hope that it wasn't too much of a problem for you. We look forward to welcoming you back very soon.

"Ideal place for recharging your batteries !"
Gite Etoile Bleu had everything we needed for a relaxing week. Our hosts were most welcoming, very friendly but not intrusive, providing all the necessities and more, including an excellent welcome pack and plenty of information on the local area in order to make the most of our stay. The house is off the beaten track, with no light pollution so that the starry skies and sunsets were breathtaking. There are plenty of walks around the area, for hikers and ramblers of all abilities. If you are looking for a quiet break to re-charge your batteries, and enjoy the French countryside, then this is the place for you. Drive for 30 minutes in any direction and see the changing landscape. Or lie on a lounger, or sit in the hot-tub, with a gin & tonic or glass of wine, reading a book and watching a magnificent sunset - who could ask for more ?
