The Mainland Greece region

Chalkidiki is a peninsula of Macedonia in Greece between two gulfs ,Thermaikou and Strymonikou and extends three smaller peninsulas Kassandra, Sithonia and Mount Athos. In Greek mythology there is always a mention of Chalkidiki:'In Kassandra is burried the son of Earthquake .Also Athos formed from the rock that throw to Gods the homonymous giant or Sithonia took her name from the son of Poseidonas(the God of the sea) Sithona.

Eight hundred years before Christ many people arriving to the area ,most of them from Chalkida and Eretria .
Five hundred years before Christ the area has 32 city-states ,who they are established the' foundation of Chalkideon' under the leadership of Olynthos. In 348 B.C. Fillipos the King of Macedonia incorporates the area under the Macedonian Kingdom. In Hellenistic Years established three big cities :Kassandreia (315 B.C.),Uranupolis(315 B.C.),Antigoneia in the middle of today's Thessaloniki(280B.C.).In 168 B.C. the area and the cites conquested from the Romans and the area looses the progress and development that she had.
In Christian Centuries it will accept many attacks from the Goths (269 A.C.) Unnus (600 A.C.) and Katalans (1307 A.C.).In the 9th century established the foundation of monasteries of Mount Athos. After the 12th century in case of the council reform the area separated to 5 different councils: Kalamarias, Ermeilias, Lerrisou, Kassandreias and Loggou. In 14th century a big part of Chalkidiki incorporated by the Serbians and in 1430 all the area enslaved to the Turks and was a big part of the area of Thessaloniki. It divided to three taxable areas of Kassandras, Mantemohorion and Hasikohorion. The Turks never touched or been to the Mount Athos that was all these years a independent and separate area.At the end of 18th century all the parts they get total financial development. In cause of this development they concede attacks from pirates.

In 1821 Chaklkidiki revolt under the Greek Revolution with the leadership of Emmanoil Pappas without any success with the result being disastrous for the area.It will come stronger again and in 1854 it will be a new revolution under the leadership of Tsiamis Karatasos without any success as well.In the beggining of our century Chalkidiki plays a big part to 'Makedoniko Agona'.Many people from the area fight for their freedom and at the end they will succeed when in October 1912 Chalkidiki become free under the Greeks. In 1922 , thousands of refugees from the Little Asia established themselves to the area and a new phase of history begins. Twenty seven new cities and villages have been created , the contribution of them in economical and cultural development of the area is priceless.

The natural beaty ,the history ,the traditional architecture of the area and the hospitable people contributed in such a way that in recent years,Chalkidiki had an amazing development in tourism. Thousands of tourists every year visited and enjoy the beaches. The unique sea and spotlessly clean beaches awarded every year from the European Union with blue flags everywhere.

Olynthos : The most famous ancient city in Chalkidiki for a century. Founded in the mythological years. From archeological findings resulted that in the location of the city was a priceless prohistoric settlement. The findings of the excavations exists to the museums of Thessaloniki and Polygyros.

The Canal Of Xerxis: Famous Canal that Xerxis build in 492 B.C. when he tried to conquer Greece from the north. It is between Ierrissos and Uranupolis only (12 miles from the Last Paradise).

Cave Of Petralona : Near to village Petralona in a distance of 800m and altimeter of 250m in the foot of mountain 'Katsika'exists the famous cave of Petralona. Discovered in 1959 from the local people when they were looking for water.Named 'Kokkini gi' ( Terra rosa) from the red stones that they give colour to the the stalaktites of the cave. In 1960 ,discovered a skull aged 35 years old ,older human being from Homo Erectus to Homo Sapiens era. The distance for the famous cave is an hour and ten min. from the Last Paradise.

Ierissos:A small town of the perfecture of Halkidiki with 3000 inhabitants built in a distance of 80 miles from Thessaloniki and 50 miles from Polygyros. It is the continuation of ancient Acanthus, colony of the island of Andros in Aegean sea ,established in the 7th century B.C. in the site of prehistoric hamlet. Certain scholars believe that the name of the ancient city originated from the thorns(in Greek the thorn is called acanthos) that used to fill the place. In any case the city was renowned for its excellent wine during the the ancient times to our days. Ierissos today is one of the more lively cities of the area with lots of coffee-shops,restaurants , shops has become one of the main cities of Halkidiki. Tourists that they are interested in history may visit theb ruins of the Byzantine Castle, the remains of the Byzantine Cathedral, the tower of 'Krouna' built during the 14th century A.D.,the ancient cemetery of Acanthus e.t.c. Ierissos is only 7 miles from the Last Paradise.

Megali Panagia: A large historic village ,community of the perfecture of Halkidiki with 3500 inhabitants that is 20 miles from the Last Paradise,is the main municipality of the area. The village allready existed in the 10th century, with the name 'capetanikeion Reveniceias'(a capetanikeion was a small administrative entity in the late Byzantine period). It kept its name until the second half of the last century, being called shortly Revenikia.During Turkish rurle it was one of the villages that operated that operated the mines of Stratoniki Madem-Laccos.It was eventually destroyed by the Turks in 1821 during the Greek Revolution. It gained particular importance after 1860,when it became a place of pilgrimage for the Holy Virgin,as an icon of Her was found here. The church was erected in 1863 and was repaired after the earthquake of 1932.Important is the wooden carvings of its interior that were made around 1870.Also many of the old houses of the village are interesting.

Ouranupolis: A community of the perfecture of Halkidiki, with 770 inhabitants that is 10 miles from the Last Paradise. This village was founded by refugees from Asia Minor,on a site that was occupied by a dependency of the Vatopedi Monastery of Mount Athos,to which the whole region belonged from the 13th century. The name was borrowed from Ouranupolis, a city founded by Alexarchus, brother of Cassander,in 315B.C.,on the ruins of an even more ancient city,by the name of Sane. The city of Ouranupolis had, according to Strabo, a perimeter of 30 stadia, and was situated at short distance from the place where Trypiti lies today and not where modern Ouranupoli is. Today Ouranupoli is the main port for ships bound for the religious community of Mount Athos and apart from the beautiful beaches which it has , it can offer the base for sightseeing a region with particular historic interest. One of the places to visit is the Tower of Prosforiou, the best preserved of its kind. Its erection date is estimated to be before 1344.The Tower was built to protect the dependency of the Vatopedi monastery and until the end of the last century it was preserved undamaged.Around 1850 though the highest floor fell in and at that time the roof that the visitor can see today added. Also interesting is the building of dependency(1903).Near the border with Mount Athos,at short distance from the village, one can see the Frankokastro that its name implies(Frankish Castle),dates from the time of Frankish rule (13th century).

Pyrgadikia:A community with 487 inhabitants at a distance of 16 miles from the Last Paradise, one of the most graphic villages of the area. The village was founded after the uprooting by Greek refugees from Asia Minor, near a place which in ancient times had been occupied by the city of Pilorus,as it mentioned by Herodotus. After the Persian Wars ,Pilorus joined the first Athenian Alliance and it is mentioned to the tribute list of Alliance till 433B.C. In the Byzantine Period the region of the village belonged to the Docheiariou monastery of Mount Athos. On the site of Kampos a tower still stands, which was built at the end of 14th century to protect the dependency, while from the other installations still remain two buildings of 1885 intact till today, east of Kampos, towards the sea. Also interesting is the Wall(dated to Byzantine period),that was built to protect the peninsula, and the church of Agios Dimitrios,a building of the middle of the 19th century, from which the village took its second name.Today Pyrgadikia they are one of the most buzzy and busy places of the area during the summer ,with numerous cafes and tavernas by the sea. You will be amazed from the architecture and structure of the buildings and the area.

Amouliani:A community of the perfecture of Halkidiki with 607 inhabitants is built on an island, actually the only inhabited island of Halkidiki is only 20 min.with a boat from Last Paradise and 40 min.with the car by driving to Ouranupoli and get the boat from there. It was founded after 1922,by refugees of Asia Minor,on a site that was the property of the Vatopedi monastery. It is one of the most beautiful tiny little islands of Greece. You can visit the old ship house erected by the monks near the port of village,a building of the middle of previous century, the church(1865) which the inhabitants of the new village enlarged by adding an extension to it ,and the school tha was founded at the beginning of this century. The salt-pans of the south coastof the island are worth visiting, and one can try to make an excursion to the small islands Drenia nearby.

Other data about the region: The main products of all the villages in the area are olives and olive oil, fish (always fresh and tasty) ,almonds, carpets made from goat wool, and various hand-made textiles from Ouranoupoli, beans and wool textiles from Megali Panagia. The summer tourist may enjoy the feast on August 15,at Megali Panagia, which is one of the most traditional of the whole region, and lasts from August 1st till August 15th.Also worth mentioning is the feast at Pyrgadikia,on September 8,when the church of the village is celebrated.
