The Macedonia region

Situated in Northern Greece, surrounded my mountain and sea in the Chalkidiki peninsula- a popular holiday destination for Greeks, Eastern and Northern Europeans. The first Greek settlers in Chalkidiki came around the 8th century BC and founded cities such as Toroni and Scione. Also, the ancient city of Stageira in Chalkidiki was the birthplace of the great philosopher Aristotle.

And Mount Athos region is part of the peninsula of Chalkidiki,. This is a World Heritage Site and autonomous polity in the Hellenic Republic, Athos is home to 20 Eastern Orthodox monasteries, an unspoiled beauty region and of a great historical interest.

The cottage is in the village estate ''Mykoniatika'' only 5 minutes by car from the busier town ''N.Kalikratia'' and 30 minutes from the city of Thessaloniki. Thessaloniki is Greece's second major economic, commercial and political centre, and a major transportation hub for the rest of southeastern Europe. its commercial port is also of great importance for Greece and the southeastern European hinterland. The city is renowned for its festivals, events and vibrant cultural life in general.

Events such as the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair and the Thessaloniki International Film Festival are held annually, while the city also hosts the largest bi-annual meeting of the Greek diaspora. In 2014 Thessaloniki will be the European Youth Capital.

Founded in 315 BC by Cassander of Macedon, Thessaloniki's history spans some 2,300 years. An important metropolis by the Roman period, Thessaloniki was the second largest and wealthiest city of the Byzantine Empire. Thessaloniki is home to numerous notable Byzantine monuments, including the Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as several Roman, Ottoman and Sephardic Jewish structures. The city's main university, Aristotle University, is the largest in Greece and the Balkans.

Chalkidiki

The cottage is in the privet holiday resort ''Mykoniatika'' only 5 minutes by car from the busier town ''N.Kalikratia'', where you can find many cafes, restaurants, clubs, cinema, post office, banks, markets, pharmacies.

On the streets around ''Mykoniatika'' there are also a mini market, and a couple of beach bars.

The area becomes busier in the weekends, but is rather quite during the week.

There are everyday links by bus and car to all other main Chalikidiki popular destinations, such as the Sani holiday resort, Posidi and elsewhere.

Music concerts, theatre and festivities are often held in the area in the summer period. The cost of life in this part of Chalkidiki is cheaper in comparison with the rest areas of the peninsula.

Cycling in the area is rather safe. There are options of getting Greek language or yoga lessons too. However, having a car gives you the independence to explore whenever you like further the region, and get to most distant and unspoiled beauty areas of Chalkidiki(i.e Kavourotrupes, Pirgadikia, Aigeopelagitika, Sarti'') etc

"Heavenly Retreat"

Isidora and her Mother where a delight to deal with, and went out of their way to help with planning our trip and advice on travel options.

The property is so sweet, a classic Greek holiday home, with white washed walls. The location is idyllic: set in a small residential community, no cars and feels very safe, and 5 minutes walk to the sea.. for us this was simply heaven!

There is a small mini market within walking distance of the property. For a wider variety of goods you will need to take a short car/bus ride (5 minutes)
