About this location
The Poitou-Charentes region
This part of the Charente has its own micro climate and is second only to the Cote d'Azur in terms of number of sunshine hours.
Charente is famed for its double-distilled brandy (80% is exported). Its popularity seems to grow - supporting the local economy and the prosperous town of Cognac.
Surrounding Cognac are rolling vineyards & quiet villages dotted with mini chateaux - the properties of wealthy Cognac producers.
A good place for walking and for a chance for a refreshing swim, head to the pools of the river Antenne.
The cathedral city of Angouleme is well worth a visit with its stunning cathedral and quaint, narrow streets.
Riverside leisure park within 3 minutes drive-safe bathing lake with a sandy beach, plenty of things to keep the kids happy.....and free admission!......even a bar for the big kids!
Another safe bathing lake with sandy beach at Brossac Lakes, some 15kms away. Only 20kms from Aubeterre, officially recognised as one of the prettiest villages in France , with its famous monolithic Church.
Lots of local restaurants to suit every taste and budget.
Our local restaurant offers a lunchtime 5 course meal, including wine....for 12 euros! Or, for a special occasion you could try the Internationally renowned restaurant in the Chateau, very reasonably priced.
Plenty to do in the area for all ages........or simply laze around the pool

"If you want peace and quiet, relaxation, this place fits the bill."
We're not so young, so the quiet appealed to us. We're really looking forward to coming back in August with son, daughter in law and 2 children (10 and 7) - there's enough to do for active kids in the pool or within 3 or 4 miles a water park, canoeing on the River Dronne, plus the seaside (albeit 90 minutes away). Boulangerie and (basic) restaurant 2 minutes drive away, supermarkets, cafes etc... in Chalais (5 miles away). We stayed in the smallest gite, kitchen is small but adequate, shower room a bit dated but functional. Mr Thompson couldn't have been more helpful, he really went out of his way when I had a problem with my car, my French isn't technical enough, but he drove me to a local garage, explained the symptoms, took my car to the garage on his trailer (you're not allowed to tow in France) and got me sorted, without being ripped off. Brilliant, he couldn't have been more helpful. We don't go on holiday expecting to find home from home, everywhere's different and we wouldn't be going back if there was anything we weren't happy with. firstname.lastname@example.org
