The West Country / Devon region

Dartmoor is an area of moorland in the centre of Devon, England. Protected by National Park status, it covers 953 km² (368 mile²). The granite upland dates from the Carboniferous period of geological history. The moorland is capped with many exposed granite hilltops (known as tors), providing habitats for Dartmoor wildlife. The highest point is High Willhays, 621 m (2,040 ft) above sea level. The entire area is rich in antiquities and archaeology.

Dartmoor is managed by the Dartmoor National Park Authority whose 26 members are drawn from Devon County Council, local District Councils and Government.

Chagford area

Chagford is an ancient Stannary town situated on the north eastern edge of Dartmoor. It is a lively friendly town with a good range of shops and four pubs to choose from. Castle Drogo, the last castle to be built in this country and now owned by the National Trust is just a few miles away. There is wonderful walking in the area with magnificent scenery both on the moor and along the river Teign through surrounding farmland.

Chagford is a unique place, attracting visitors from all over the world. Chagford was probably established in Saxon Times and the name means “The ford where the gorse grows”. The eight-sided Market House, known locally as the ‘pepper pot’, is a focal point in Chagford and is on the site of the old Stannary Court. Whatever the time of year Chagford is an ideal holiday destination. A lively and strong social spirit ensures an active calendar of events throughout the year.
