2 miles north of Chagford, this superb 'upside down' cottage has been converted with much style from a barn close to the friendly owners' home, within a shared, traditional Dartmoor farmstead (some farming and a 'hobby farm' with ponies, rare breed sheep, hens). At the side, your own private garden (table/chairs, barbecue) surrounded by 11 acres of farmland which you are welcome to wander; lovely walks nearby. Stabling available, by arrangement. Games area  (two half-sized pool tables, unheated, small children should be supervised) above the stables.Gravelled path (60 yards) from parking to entrance. Steps up to split-level, whole-of-the-top-floor living/dining/kitchen with stripped wood floors (rugs), granite walls and original, high beams; 5 steps up from kitchen/dining area (dishwasher, microwave, freezer, woodburner) to roomy living area with comfy leather sofas, TV/DVD, lots of DVDs and farmland views. Downstairs (stairgate), two bedrooms, both with TV/DVD ' a stylish double (5' bed) with en suite bathroom (suite plus bath-shower and hand-shower), and a twin (zip-linkable to 6' double) with en suite bathroom (suite plus hand-shower). Hall and bathrooms have Travertine stone-tiled floors, bedrooms are carpeted. Laptop provided. Outside, utility/drying room (washing machine, tumble drier, coat/boot racks) and log store. Spring water. Stylish and comfortable, a really great conversion.

The Devon region

Dartmoor: "the last great wilderness in Southern England". Great rock-tors top many of its often heather-covered hills. Marvellous for walking, riding, tor-climbing, picnicking, kite-flying, pony-trekking and, if you're at all energetic, not seeing other people. Just off its edge, amid woods, valleys and farmed hills, are many pretty villages (sometimes thatched) and very lively small towns. All is protected from caravans, tents and most ugliness by being in the Dartmoor National Park.

The half of the moor north of the B3212 is the highest and wildest; no villages within it, almost no cultivation. The southern half has the most spectacular tors, best wooded river valleys, a few villages (like Widecombe, Buckland) in green-field 'oases'. The moor's eastern edge is the softest, most wooded, most popular: Chagford, Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and Bovey Tracey are among its best villages, and the river Teign is an exceptionally beautiful river valley. The Dart(s) – two of them rise in the moor's middle and join at Dartmeet – is/are equally beautiful all the way to the sea at Dartmouth. Very lovely, too, are the valleys of the rivers Avon, Erme, Walkham and Tavy; Tavy Cleave, on the latter, is the western moor's most dramatic place. The quality of a pub can change so quickly we hesitate to recommend, but there are plenty of them; and of places to ride or pony-trek.

Chagford: lively, friendly little town (pubs, shops, outdoor swimming pool, tennis) away from main roads in the shelter of high Dartmoor. Past it the river Teign (fishing) hurries through woods and meadows below Castle Drogo (Nat. Trust). Excellent walking; superb views. Open moor, 2 miles; golf, 3; Exeter (city amenities), 17; sea/beaches, about 20.

"Prachtige landelijke cottage"

Mooie, schone en met smaak ingerichte cottage midden in Dartmoor National Park. Hele aardige eigenaren die je met rust laten maar wel voor je klaar staan. Bij aankomst zelfs wat groenten, sla en eiere… More
