The Devon region

Dartmoor: "the last great wilderness in Southern England". Great rock-tors top many of its often heather-covered hills. Marvellous for walking, riding, tor-climbing, picnicking, kite-flying, pony-trekking and, if youre at all energetic, not seeing other people. Just off its edge, amid woods, valleys and farmed hills, are many pretty villages (sometimes thatched) and very lively small towns. All is protected from caravans, tents and most ugliness by being in the Dartmoor National Park.

The half of the moor north of the B3212 is the highest and wildest; no villages within it, almost no cultivation. The southern half has the most spectacular tors, best wooded river valleys, a few villages (like Widecombe, Buckland) in green-field oases. The moors eastern edge is the softest, most wooded, most popular: Chagford, Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and Bovey Tracey are among its best villages, and the river Teign is an exceptionally beautiful river valley. The Dart(s) two of them rise in the moors middle and join at Dartmeet is/are equally beautiful all the way to the sea at Dartmouth. Very lovely, too, are the valleys of the rivers Avon, Erme, Walkham and Tavy; Tavy Cleave, on the latter, is the western moors most dramatic place. The quality of a pub can change so quickly we hesitate to recommend, but there are plenty of them; and of places to ride or pony-trek.

Chagford

Chagford: lively, friendly little town (pubs, shops, outdoor swimming pool, tennis) away from main roads in the shelter of high Dartmoor. Past it the river Teign (fishing) hurries through woods and meadows below Castle Drogo (Nat. Trust). Excellent walking; superb views. Open moor, 2 miles; golf, 3; Exeter (city amenities), 17; sea/beaches, about 20.

"Cozy Cottage Steps from Lovely Chagford Town Square"

Pineapple Cottage, named for the door knocker on its blue door, provided us with a perfect base for a week of exploring Dartmoor National Park. It is located just steps away from the town square, wit… More

Many thanks. Chagford is an excellent location that is perfect for walkers wanting to explore the wilds of Dartmoor and has a great of choice of food, drink and shopping right on your doorstep. The owners would be delighted to hear such lovely feedback on their property and hospitality. Particularly in peak season parking can indeed become a little difficult. Luckily the car park at the top of town can usually be relied upon and is good value at £2.70 per day. I'm glad that you had such a wonderful holiday.
