Charente is one of the most attractive areas in SW France with its gently rolling scenery. It is reputed to be the second sunniest area of France (surpassed only by the Cote d’Azur). The cottage is located close to the borders of the Dordogne which is a Department with lots of great scenery and history to offer and also the Vienne and the Haute Vienne where the famous Limousin beef can be sampled.

The Chabanais area
Le Vieux Grenier (The Old Granary) is situated in a rural hamlet just outside the village of St Quentin Sur Charente which has a small shop/cafe and is close to the lakes of the Haute Charente where there are beaches with water sports and fishing. There are two 18 hole golf courses within easy reach and close by there are also the following : adventure park ( zip wire - climbing – bungee ) - ornithologique - Velo-rail - National WW2 monuments - Roman baths / archaeological sites - and many attractive and historical towns.
The nearest town (Chabanais) is 6 km. and the very attractive La Rochefoucauld and Rochechouart with their fairy tale chateaux are close by. There is a selection of good supermarkets within the area and there are regular markets in some of the nearby towns.Various restaurants and small hotels can be found in the surrounding area; particularly Chabanais, Rochechouart and St Junien.

Guestbook for Charming Farmhouse with Pool
Date of Stay July 2011
We have just returned from a 2 week stay at Le Vieux Grenier. It is beautifully and quietly located in a tiny hamlet with rural views. The neighbours, both English and French, were very friendly especially Dot and Colin who were exceptionally welcoming. The pool area is lovely with comfortable sun loungers, beach towels and some pool inflatables thoughtfully provided by the owners. The living accommodation is very clean with a well-equipped kitchen and comfortable lounge. It was easy to find towns and castles well worth a visit in the local area so we had plenty to keep the children entertained even on the cooler days. We would be very happy to recommend Le Vieux Grenier to our friends – it makes a great family holiday base.

We recently spent a wonderful week at Le Vieux Grenier. If you are looking for an authentic “French/France get away from it all" break this is the place for you. The cottage is spacious and full of quirky rustic charm and is furnished to a high standard. The garden is just the place in which to relax and the icing on the cake is the beautiful private pool.
We found several excellent places to eat in the area but for a special night out we would recommend Le Roc du Boeuf in Rochechouart: we've never had a better meal.
The owners have provided an ideal base to explore a wonderful area of France. Well done.

We stayed in this charming cottage for 3 weeks in July/Aug 2010. Our party consisted of Grandma, Grandad, Mum, Dad and our 10 year old daughter(so quite a mixed family bunch). All the rooms in the cottage are spacious and beautifully decorated the kitchen (which is the heart of the home)was extremely well equipped with everything I needed to cook a family feast every evening.
The master bedroom upstairs has the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in so I was in no hurry to get back to my own bed in Liverpool.
The outside area's are as well kept as the interior of the cottage and the pool being one of the most important features to us was delightful and used every day by my little girl.
The owners(Chris and Helen) were really helpful and answered any questions I had leading up to our holiday putting my mind at ease regarding facilities for my Mum as she is disabled with limited mobility. I am very happy to say she had no problems getting about the cottage and the grounds. Our neighbours(Dot et Colin) at the cottage became our friends and helped make this holiday a fabulous experience from the moment we arrived to the tearful goodbye.
The best recommendation I can give to anyone reading this and considering it as their holiday choice is that we are returning in 2011 for a month to revisit our friends and enjoy this home from home. I can truthfully say my family and I are excited for Summer 2011.

The vieux grenier was an ideal holiday house - plenty of space, everything one needs in the kitchen, lovely quiet country setting, great pool and very helpful, welcoming neighbours. The kids swam every day of our two weeks here.
The wider area is a great mix of French farming land and countryside with beautiful little villages and towns dotted longside the local rivers, La Vienne and la Charante. We spent much of our time visiting cafes in local towns and generally wandering about - Rochechourt was lovely but our favourite was Confolens: a jewel of a little town set on the Vienne. In terms of things to do there's plenty of lakes to picnic by, and swim in afterwards. The Roman baths at Chassenon are interesting, and the velo rail is beautiful and fun, and doesn't require Tour de France type fitness.
What I will take away from this holiday is simply the different pace and focus of life. Good food, family, sunshine, swimming, and calm.

We had a great time, the house and garden are lovely and so quiet (we live in a fairly quiet village but we noticed the difference! ). The pool was just great - the children loved it, spending ages in it. It was about 28 degrees every day so perfect.
We had some interesting weather ranging from very hot sunshine to a bit of rain but it didn't stop us doing anything and we visited Chabanais, Angouleme, Oradour-sur-Glane, Limoges, the Lakes, Futuroscope and the chateau at Rochefocauld. A week goes so quickly!!
The neighbours Dot and Colin were lovely - really helpful and friendly but not at all intrusive. We enjoyed a tour of their house too! Many thanks for all your help and info and letting your house to us.

Ideal relaxing holiday for a family with a fantastic swimming pool. A large garden with trees and shrubs and ideal for barbecuing. The nearest town had a good supermarket and other shops and there was a local shop/restaurant/bar within walking distance. The house was very well equipped. The description was very accurate and the property was very clean and well maintained. Our family really enjoyed our time at Le Vieux Grenier and we would recommend this property.

"A great retreat"
"Le Vieux Grenier was the perfect place for a get away from it all relaxing holiday. The accommodation was excellent with everything you could need provided, a real home from home including English TV. The gardens and pool were glorious, enhanced by perfect weather. The local town for essentials is 10 mins by car and there was lots to do and see within a 30 minute radius including chateaux, historic villages and lakes but it was difficult to tear ourselves away from the pool. Some may find the location a little isolated but for us it was ideal, just what we prefer and gave an enchanting night sky. Having English neighbours was a great bonus. Picking fresh juicy peaches off the tree in the garden was divine. Our 2 teenage children enjoyed it too but they are not into clubs/nightlife etc. A fantastic time had by all. Our recent two weeks in Le Vieux Grenier were absolutely wonderful. The house is great, a lovely traditional building but with all modern comforts. Outside, the gardens and pool were magnificent, our two children were in the water for more time than they were out. The local area is beautiful, the lakes only minutes away and a fantastic choice of good, family friendly restaurants also nearby. We plan to return to France soon but it will be tough to find anywhere that comes close to Le Vieux Grenier.
