The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region
Similar countryside to England but with a better climate, this region is uncrowded and peaceful but within a vibrant French farming community. Although away from it all we are only 5 minutes from a major supermarket and under half an hour from a major town.
by car. Limoges and Angouleme are both interesting cities, less that an hour's drive away.
Nearby are two beautiful lakes affording many activities including restaurants and beaches. There is a good selection of restaurants nearby offering a wide range of choice of food styles, from English pub to French chateau.
The region is excellent for walking, riding or cycling with gentle hills, rivers, lakes and beautiful views. There are plenty of places to visit including Roman ruins, castles, chateaus, caves, old churches, vineyards, adventure or animal parks, breweries or the beautiful local towns and hamlets with their atmospheric cafes and markets.
in many ways it is like visiting the England of the 1950s, with quiet roads, unspoilt countryside and a charming innocence long lost in the hubbub of the modern world. A great domain to relax, unwind and sample the French "Joie de vivre"!
Magnieras lies on GR (Grande Randonnée) 48 which runs from the Limousin to the Pays de Loire, and locally connects Rochechouart to Confolens.
Pressignac is also well served by clearly way-marked circular walking routes and has an active randonnée association which ensures that the paths (chemins) are well maintained. Several marked paths pass Magnieras, and the possibilities for walks from the gite are endless, with anything from half an hour to a full day without walking the same track twice.
Walks from Magnieras will take you past fields of brown Limousin cattle and the hay, maize and cereals grown to feed them, through woodlands of chestnut and oak, past lakes and ponds, through small farming hamlets and pretty villages, and around the large leisure lakes, les lacs de Haute Charente, with their beaches and facilities.
