The Central Thailand / Bangkok / Prachuab Khiri Khan region
THE MONARCHY: In 1946 the King of Thailand, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, came to the throne. He is the longest reigning monarch in the world. He is loved and respected by his people. Thailand is both unusual and fortunate. Fortunate because of having a King who has both far-reaching knowledge and generous compassion: and unusual because throughout each year of his reign, he has become more deeply loved and respected by his subjects. Today, after having reigned for more than half a century, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej is known and admired far beyond the borders of his own country. He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on December 5, 1927. He married Queen Sirikit on April 28, 1950.
Climate: There are three seasons: rainy (June to October), hot (March to May), and cool (November to February). Annual average temperature is about 29 degree Celsius with monthly averages ranging from 35 degrees Celsius in April to 26 degrees Celsius in December.
Language: The standard Thai language is used, while English is a mandatory subject in public schools and is widely spoken and understood in business and tourist areas.
Currency: Thai Baht
Cha-Am area
CHA-AM: The owners of this property have lived in Bangkok for the past 11 years and so are able to maintain the property to it’s highest standards. They have traveled extensively and have not found another place where all anyone expects of you is a smile. The people are friendly and courteous and extremely service oriented. A complete stranger will offer help in any situation. All you need to bring with you to have a superb holiday in this “Land of Smiles” is indeed a smile.
Although ChaAm is a little quieter than it’s sister city of Hua Hin it is only a 20 minute drive away and is easily accessible by taxi. Motor cycles can be rented locally for approximately 6 GBP per day or 30 GBP per week from J & J restaurant.
This apartment is in a safe, secure and quiet location and is just 400 meters from our local favourite restaurant. J J’s seafood restaurant is a must for casual dining. Jay offers consistently good quality and extremely reasonably priced fare with a variety of western and Thai dishes on the menu. My personal favourites are her crab curry, deep fried whole fish with garlic, shrimps with chilli paste and, of course, the best fish and chips in the area. You can dine on the sandy beach or at the roadside tables. J J’s is very popular with the farangs (foreigners) from around the world and she speaks very good English.
After a relaxing lunch why not take a few steps and treat yourself to a massage right on the beach. Traditional Thai or aromatherapy massages are available as well as manicures and pedicures. And at truly affordable prices not to be beaten anywhere in the world! Ahhh, bliss!!
Jay can also arrange tours to local attractions in air conditioned cars at very reasonable prices. She also offers laundry service.
Also, mere steps away from The Beach Palace is the new Springfield@sea resort and spa where you can enjoy a more upscale spa treatment and dining. Live music is offered at the weekends.
Activities close to the residence include horse riding on the beach whilst banana boat rides provide ample fun for the younger members of the family. Jet skis are also available for rent. Para sailing is available in Hua Hin and Kite-boarding is very popular. There are several schools giving lessons and tuition with equipment for hire.
There are numerous sightseeing opportunities in and around Cha-Am and Hua Hin. In addition to several Wats (Buddhist temples), and palaces, there are natural attractions like caves, waterfalls, isolated beaches, mangrove swamps, mountain vistas and a variety of animal life.
HUA HIN: Located approx. 190 km south of Bangkok and 92 kilometers north of Prachuab Khiri Khan, its provincial chief town and it is a coastal, well known resort town, set on the west coast of the Gulf of Thailand, Hua Hin has a population of around 60,000. His majesty, King Bhumibol Adulyadej has his summer palace here where he now resides most of the year.
LOCAL ATTRACTIONS: CHA-AM: ATV and Paint-balling park.See website: www.aroundchaam.com for more information.
HUA HIN: While in Hua Hin check out the Thai Boxing Garden, they have fights every Tuesday and Saturday night. It is 300 baht (approximately 5 GBP) entrance fee which includes a free beer or soft drink. There are 5 fights each night with usually at least one champion fighting. Classes are also available for beginners to advanced every day at a time to suit yourself. The Thai Boxing garden is on Poonsuk road behind the Hilton hotel.
Spas in Hua Hin offer luxurious treatments for every budget. The treatments include both traditional remedies and modern techniques. Over the past few years these spas have become leaders in Thailand. Many Spas in Hua Hin also offer traditional Thai healing arts as a form of treatment. There are also alternative treatments available such as Rieki. Resorts offer many detox and well-being programs.
FESTIVALS & EVENTS: March: The skies fill with an array of colourful kites at the annual Kite Festival. April: Songkran Festival. This marks the traditional Thai New Year. Water festivities in the streets are fun-filled but stay home if you want to stay dry! June: The Hua Hin Jazz Festival which includes three nights of local and international talent. This is a fun filled time and is held on the beach. September: The King's Cup Elephant Polo Tournament comes to town, with international teams coming from as far as Sri Lanka and Europe. The event, which raises money for the National Elephant Institute also includes parades and other festivities.
DOLPHIN BAY RESORT Kayak to Monkey Island, take a fishing trip with local fishermen (day or night fishing) The most interesting wildlife living in the bay is of course the pod of Indo-pacific humpback dolphins, five or six of which are pink! They live and breed in the bay for 10 of 12 months of the year and it's always an exciting experience if you're lucky to see them close up while swimming or boating.
GOLF Hua Hin is one of the leading golf resorts in South East Asia, Hua Hin and Cha-Am offer eight championship golf courses within twenty minutes drive of Hua Hin town or Cha-Am. Thailand offers some of the best and most reasonably priced golf courses in the world.Courses are well maintained and service is excellent.
A brief list of recommended tours follows and can be booked on the internet via www.sawanasia.travel/en
PALA U WATERFALL This half-day excursion takes you close to the Myanmar border, in the jungle west of Hua Hin. This area of uninhabited peaks and valleys leads to Pala-U, a 15-tiers waterfall, legendary for its clouds of butterflies. Enjoy a leisurely walk through the national park to reach the first level of the waterfall and then continue to climb up to the third stage. You can then swim in the natural pools and feed the fish in the waterfall.
SAM ROI YOD NATIONAL PARK “Three Hundred Peaks” (Sam Roi Yod) is a fascinating area of limestone mountains, caves, beaches, islands and marshy wetlands that is home to a great variety of plants, birds and some endangered animals. Between September and November, hundreds of migratory shore birds from Siberia, China, and Northern Europe arrive at the mudflats to feed and rest, before continuing their southern journey.
RIVER KWAI: This excursion requires an early start to reach the world famous Bridge over the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi. The bridge was built during World War II by the prisoners of war under the occupation of the Japanese. Also visit the famous Tiger Temple, go Bamboo Rafting and riding an Elephant.
PETCHABURI HISTORICAL TOUR: Visit Khao Wang, the summer residence of King Mongkut (Rama IV) who built the palace in 1860. A favourite among Thais, this magnificent site is the first palace complex in Thailand to be built on a mountain 95 meters above sea level.
HUA HIN ELEPHANT TREKKING: The Elephants are one of the most recognizable symbols of Thailand and were used for centuries as a primary mode of transport, as well as dragging off tree logs etc.
HUA HIN BOAT TRIP WITH SIAM PEARL: Boat Charter in Prachuab Khiri Khan. Explore the beauty of the Gulf of Thailand close to Hua Hin. In Prachuap Khiri Khan you can discover secret places only accessible from the water to make your holiday a magical memory.
