The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Bouches-du-Rhone region
Provence is a region of South Eastern France on the Mediterranean Sea, adjacent to Italy. Its name derives from the fact that it was one of the first provinces outside of Roman Italy. The climate is a Mediterranean one - hot, dry summer and very little rain, with average temperatures in July/August of 30 degrees celsius.
Ceyreste area
Situated on the border between the departments of the Var and Bouches du Rhône - just a few kilometres from the sea -Ceyreste is a picturesque village which was established during the barbarian invasions by the inhabitants of La Ciotat down on the coast as a refuge inland. Ceyreste has preserved part of its surrounding walls and the fortified gates, as well as several 17th-century houses which give the village a great deal of charm. There are unusual “cabarottes” - covered passages which span the shady, winding streets and a Roman fountain in front of which there is a heavy stone trough - formerly the church font. The fortified church dates from the Middle Ages and is listed as a historic monument and in the choir there is a lovely copy of the Raphaël “Transfiguration”. Ceyreste is totally uncommercial and unspoilt with few tourists with local shops for everyday needs and a good restaurant and café-bar. The coast is only 5 minutes or so drive away – with the lively resort of La Ciotat only 5km from Ceyreste - with lots of restaurants and fine sandy beaches the nearest. To the west a drive of 10-20 minutes offers a further choice of family resorts – Les Lecques, Bandol or Sanary and 10 minutes to the east one of the jewels of the whole of the south of France – the superb fishing village of Cassis is 15km away. For a change from the coast a 10 minutes drive inland to the spectacular medieval perched villages of La Cadière d’Azur and Le Castellet. In addition to the daily open local shops in Ceyreste there is a weekly market on Friday mornings and every day of the week a different provençal market is within a short drive at one of the neighbouring villages
