The Tuscany / Siena Province region

The landscapes south and east of Siena are among the most classic and beautiful in the Tuscany region. Undulating green hills capped by medieval, tile-roofed towns and punctuated by cypresses, churches and stone farmhouses – it’s as idyllic as it looks in the photos. And in the towns you’ll find some wonderful treasures, from Romanesque churches to wine cellars, from Etruscan museums to thermal spring-fed pools.
The Cetona area
Cetona is a beautifully preserved medieval hilltop town, strategically situated midway between Rome and Florence. It has fine views of Monte Cetona, is surrounded by pretty hills planted with cypresses and pine trees, and has a typically medieval, circular plan centred on the crest of a hill.
Recognised as one of the most beautiful medieval towns of Tuscany, Cetona has everything you need: restaurants, cafes, markets, grocery stores, interesting shops, and it's all on your doorstep. The tourist office is in the central square (the piazza) and offers maps of local hikes plus many suggestions of what the area offers.
Although a vacation in Cetona typically means rest and tranquillity in a picturesque landscape, in the last few decades the area has become fashionable for all kinds of tastes: culture, vineyards, thermal baths, footpaths, monasteries, sports, excellent food, cafeterias, and numerous festivals.
- Art lovers
Only a short drive away, art lovers will find some of the most exceptional gallery and museums in the world. In the nearby towns of Chiusi, Montepulciano, Pienza, Cortona, Perugia, Arezzo, Orvieto and Siena, history has left treasures from the time of Etruscans to the Renaissance. And don't forget that from Cetona you can easily reach Florence and Rome, by motorway, in an hour or so.
- Vineyards
The region of Cetona offers the vineyards of Montepulciano and Montalcino (see www.stradavinonobile.it/index.uk.php).
- Thermal baths
About 15km away is San Casciano dei Bagni which has one of the best spas in the area, offering a variety of beauty treatments and thermal pools. Similarly, Chianciano, which is much larger, is also famous for its therapeutic waters.
- Footpaths
Hikers, riders, biciclists and nature lovers will find footpaths and country roads that wind through hillsides and vineyards where they will discover hidden corners and breathtaking views.
- Monastery (Convento San Francesco)
A few km away is a unique monastery with a world class restaurant and a fascinating history going back to St Francis of Assisi.
- Sports
If it’s sports you are after, there are tennis courts adjacent to the complex, plus a roller skating ring. About 12 km away, toward Chianciano, there is a bowling arcade and a multiplex cinema.
- Food
There are several excellent restaurants in the centre of Cetona. From the simple delights of a freshly made pizza, to the full Tuscan gastonomic experience - you will not be disappointed.
- Cafeterias
Sipping a cappuccino in the sun in one of the many traditional cafes, whilst watching the towns folk strutting by, is an experience in itself.
- Life in the piazza
The piazza is the central focal point of Cetona, offering many boutique shops, cafes, banks, etc. It has a lively nightlife, and often features markets and other local festivals.

This apartment is ideally located for visiting southern Tuschany (and Umbria). We easily made day trips to Siena, Montepulciano, Pienza (by car) and Florence (by train). If you have already done the... more |

We really did love the apartment. It was beyond our expectations. Nice, clean with good space. The views from the balcony and the bedrooms is just a summary of the Tuscan landscape. It´s amazing to see Monte Subario and other mountains about 100 km away. With this apartment is it necessary with a car. And with the heat during our visit did we really appreciate the possibility to put the car in a garage. Cetona is a nice little village and a very good starting point for exploring southern Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio. |

If Cetona's good enough for Valentino - then we figured it's good enough for us! A small town that's not overun by tourists. - but still has everything you'd need. It was great to see the locals in the piazza of a summer evening, chatting in groups, playing cards, strolling, eating icecream. The apartment was lovely with fantastic views, nice swimming pool and grounds to relax at the end of a day. The "caretakers" were helpful and friendly. We do suggest that you have a supply of easy hand-washable clothes as there is no washing machine and time is better spent enjoying the area, than in another town at the public laundry. There is also no wifi or telephone, so you need to have your own access if you want to stay in touch. Or maybe it's better to stay away from technology for a while and soak in the surrounds instead.T |

Excellent ! relaxing and enjoyable!
We loved the thermal baths nearby, the architecture, the decorations, the views and our al-fresco dinners...not to mention the sunbathing on the roof-top terrace..
