About this location

The Tuscany region

From the Etruscans to the Romans to the Renaissance, Tuscany is possibly the greatest repository of art in the world, from extraordinary paintings and sculpture to frescoes and architectural masterpieces. The vision of cypress tree lined countryside and dotted picturesque hilltop towns is enough to garner sighs of wistfulness the world over.

Visitors to Tuscany come for many reasons. Many come in search of fine art, others to explore the extraordinary countryside. Gourmets and wine buffs descend on Tuscany to enjoy the simple yet wonderful cuisine and wine. Walkers enjoy the mountain paths, cyclists the rolling hills, summer vacationers the sea coast and islands. Students come to learn the beautiful Italian language and culture.

Cetona

The house is 10 minutes drive to the local village Cetona. The medieval town of Cetona is located in the province of Siena. Given it's pretty streets and stunning countryside (resembling a renaissance painting)Cetona has been officially recognised as one of Italy's most beautiful towns and has also been awarded the prestigious 'orange flag' by the Italian Touring Club.

Unsurprisingly due to its strategic position, natural beauty, peace and high quality of life, Cetona has become home to many well-known personalities from the world of art, fashion and culture.

A tranquil land rich in history the area has extremely important Etruscan archaeological sites (guided visits possible) and is steeped in a long history of wine and olive oil production. The eastern side of Mount Cetona looks towards the magestic umbrian mountains, the lake of Trasimeno and the charming hilltop towns of Citta della Pieve and Chiusi whereas the western side looks out over the rolling hills of the UNESCO Heritage site the Val D'orcia. Montepulciano, Chiusi, Sarteano, Orvieto, Pienza, San Casciano Dei Bagni, Lago Trasimeno, Montalcino and Cortona are all within easy reach on the motorway.

The historic village of Cetona has plenty of fascinating shops, restaurants and pizzerias, as well as beautiful medieval palaces, Romanesque churches and squares. Extensive trails criss-cross Mount Cetona, the highest peak of Val di Chiana, ideal for hiking, horse-riding or cycling through unspoilt woodland.

High quality products from the local countryside include;wine, chianina meat, honey and olive oil D.O.P.Not only interesting from a cultural/gastronomic point of view, immersed in the beautiful woodland of Mount Cetona is the immaculately kept Convent of San Francesco. (According to tradition founded by Saint Francis of Assisi in the XIII century.) The Franciscan hermitage 'Santa Maria a Belverde' and various grottos can also be visited within the archeological park, Belverde.
