The Aegean Coast region

Turkey’s Treasures
If you wish to experience Turkey’s cultural, historical and natural wonders you will enjoy a visit to the following places which are all within easy reach from the villas.
Ciftlikkoy, also known as Ciftlik, is a typical Aegean fishing village and is a natural wonder with sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. The beach of Altinkum (which means golden) gets the name from it’s golden sand.
Dalyan is a small fishing village 4km North of Cesme, and has some of the region’s best fish restaurants at the border of the quay with it’s lively marina. If you enjoy seafood, you should not leave without visiting one of the restaurants in this lovely little village by the sea.
Thermal Springs of Ilica and Sifne: It is said that the thermal spring waters of Ilica and Sifne offer health benefits to sufferers of rheumatism, gout, skin diseases and various other ailments, due to the minerals in the thermal waters. Sifne, the thermal spa complex has a mud bath for the treatment of eczema, psoriasis and other skin disorders.
Alacati is popular for windsurfing and sailing is a typical Aegean town. You can experience the gone by with its natural harbour, cobblestone streets and historic windmills dotting the hillside. Day of the local market is a good day to visit Alacati, when you can withness an array of locally produced goods on offer at incredibly low prices. Smell and taste the delicious fresh fruit and vegetables and buy the latest fake ‘desinger’ clothes. Or if you just like to take it easy, have a relaxing drink in the town square and watch the world go by.
Izmir, is a cosmopolitan and lively city, hosting several International Arts and Music Festivals throughout the year. Known in Turkey as "Beautiful Izmir", the port of Izmir, offers a Mediterranean feel with its palm-lined promenades stretching the shoreline. A day trip to Izmir is ideal if you wish to shop or visit the local museums.
House of Virgin Mary
Located on the top of the "Bulbul" mountain 9 km ahead of Ephesus, the shrine of Virgin Mary enjoys a marvellous atmosphere hidden in the green. It is the place where Mary may have spent her last days. Indeed, she may have come in the area together with Saint John, who spent several years in the area to spread Christianity. Mary preferred this remote place rather than living in crowded place.
The house of Virgin Mary is a typical Roman architectural example, entirely made of stones. In the 4th century AD, a church, combining her house and grave, has been built. The original two-stored house, which consisted of an anteroom (where today candles are proposed), bedroom and praying room (Christian church area) and a room with fireplace (chapel for Muslims). A front kitchen fell into ruins and has been restored in 1940's. Today, only the central part and a room on the right of the altar are open to visitors. From there one can understand that this building looks more like a church than a house. Another interesting place is the “Water of Mary” a source to be found at the exit of the church area and where rather salty water with curative properties can be drunk.
EPHESUS - Temple of Artemis
The temple of Artemis is known as one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. It has been built in the areas of Ephesus on a flat area which has over the centuries turned into a swamp. Today one can only see the ruins of the foundations of this marvellous construction of the Hellenistic Age, entirely made of marble and full of sculptured columns' capitals and shafts. The most beautiful remainings of this temple are today exhibited in the London British Museum.
The oldest remaining date found, back dates the 6th century BC. It was surrounded by 36 huge columns later enlarged upon the orders of Lydia King of Kreisos, during the 6th century BC. Most of the exhibitions in the London British Museum belong to this period.
The new Artemis has been rebuilt in the 2nd century BC. Located on top of the previous one, it had tremendous dimensions: 125 columns of each 17,5 meters high. Unfortunately this one has also been destroyed by fire, reconstructed and again demolished by earthquakes, rebuilt and at last looted by Goths one year later.
The statue of many-breasted Artemis was the symbol of the temple but also of abundance, hunting and wild life. The genuine statue of Artemis, removed during the fire, is today exhibited in the Selcuk Museum. Many copies of this statue found during the latest excavations date back to the Roman period.
The Cesme / Ciftlikkoy area
During the high summer season the main shopping area is pedestrian, allowing you to wonder freely between the shops, restaurants and bars. In the town centre you can find a good selection of carpets, leather goods and souvenirs. If you feel adventurous, you can explore the maze of side streets to examine Cesme’s historic architecture, and witness the daily activities of the local Turkish people.
When dusk falls, Cesme becomes the place to be seen with its ‘cafe culture’ as both tourists and locals take a leisurely stroll with their family and friends to enjoy the cool evening air.
Cesme’s Peninsular offers a number of clean sandy beaches and secluded bays for swimming, sunbathing or participating in a number of water sports activities. A number of beaches have been awarded blue flag status and are cleaned daily in the height of the summer season. Pirlanta beach and Altinkum beach with it’s golden sand are just minutes away from the villas by Dolmus.
It is possible to undertake most sporting activities in the area, especially sailing, kite surfing, windsurfing, and scuba diving as the area boasts several schools due to the excellent location for these sports. You can book these activities on your arrival but we suggest you to do it ahead in time before you reach Turkey. Ensure you do your bookings and avoid getting disappointed by missing the activities. since during the months of July and August it gets too busy.
The new Kite Surfing Centre is located at the Pirlanta beach, minutes away from Chez Shemin Villas.
Even if you do not wish to Kite Surf, it’s just great to hang out and watch this extreme sport in action whilst you lay back and enjoy a drink or a meal at one of the many restaurants at this beach.
