Inaugurated in the summer of 2009, The Brook Cottage boasts a large living area with working fireplace (plenty of wood in the wood pile next to the patio!), ample seating for five with two comfortable couches, dining table and chairs and galley kitchen. The master bedroom has a queen bed, antique armoire and dresser and an en-suite tiled bathroom. The second bedroom has two antique, walnut twin beds that may be joined for an extra-large queen, an antique dresser, night table and armoire. There is also a roll-away bed for an extra person.
New for 2010! The Brook Cottage now has a television for viewing films with DVD player and disc library. Wi-fi internet access available poolside. Bring your laptops!
The Brook Cottage opens in March, as Rome rolls into its glorious Spring and you are surrounded by gorgeous green hills and fields. Take in the warm, fresh air, local festivals, wineries, your first al-fresco meal of the year. The historic center is great for sightseeing in the Spring before the summer crowds begin.
Summer is Il Sogno's busiest time as guests are attracted to our lovely, family-friendly pool, tons of private lounging (and playing!) space, our close proximity to the crystal-clear waters of Lake Bracciano and Lake Martignano, and our convenient location to golf, numerous shops and restaurants and the air-conditioned train that brings you to the center of the city in 35 minutes for 1.50 euros, which is the cost of transportation tickets in Rome proper.
Fall is often warm enough for a lake plunge and if you join us in October, you may choose to help us pick our olives, see how olive oil is made, and, of course, take some home! Fall is also a wonderful time to visit the sites as there are less crowds.
Winter is filled with festivities. Rome and the surrounding towns are busy celebrating Christmas, Hannukah, Epiphany, Carnival and the winter sales. It's great to come home and build a fire after a long day of sightseeing, reveling and shopping! The Brook Cottage is closed in winter, but our Studio Guest House is open.

The Brook Cottage is located at the end of the property. There is a parking area at the top of a chestnut staircase that leads you past an Etruscan grotto, then a stone path winds between fruit trees until you reach the patio. It is a real respite for those in search of privacy, peace and rest. Its spacious wooden interiors and field gardens also make it an ideal place for families with smaller children.
The local stone patio has a charcoal grill, table and chairs for five for dining and additional outdoor furniture for relaxing.
The house takes its name from the ancient spring that originates in the one-time Etruscan settlement, now Cesano Borgo, in the tufa bed some 20 feet below it. While the precipice is carefully fenced off, there is a unique cliff-top view. The stream that borders our back yard is home to Etruscan grottos; we also have a small one within our property, next to the stairs that lead to The Brook Cottage. The oak canopy over the house's terracotta-tiled roof along with the ferns and chestnut and hazelnut trees that grow in the valley surround the house in pastoral tranquillity.
Our extensive front lawn (2 acres!) is great for games: croquet, badminton and volleyball can all be found here. We also have table tennis and various toys. The Brook Cottage also has its own private grassy field. Or take a nature walk on our land and explore the hundreds of varieties of trees, shrubs and flowers, as well as the great variety of birds.
Guests should arrive between 3pm and 6pm. If the client expects to be late, advance notice must be given. To allow proper cleaning, earlier arrival is not permitted.
Guests should find the house in a clean and tidy condition on arrival.
Guests are responsible for the correct and decent behaviour of their party during the rental period.
Guests must vacate the house by 10am on the day of departure.
The Lazio region
Lazio is a region rich with cultural activities, ancient history, gorgeous nature and wonderful food. Il Sogno is perfectly positioned so you can make the most of your vacation with the least travel time to Rome's historical centre (30 minutes by train, the stop is five minutes away), the volcanic lakes, ruins such as Ostia Antica, Hadrian's Villa, Villa D'Este, Roman catacombs and Etruscan necropoli, quaint medieval towns and ancient settlements.
Il Sogno is a five-minute drive from the old “borgo” of Cesano, a medieval town, originally settled by the Etruscans. There are other medieval towns, such as Bracciano and Isola Farnese, with castles located within their ancient walls. There is also an embarassingly large choice of beautiful towns to visit: Calcata, Trevignano Romano, Campagnano, Anguillara, Tivoli, Civita Bagnoreggio, Nepi and the city of Viterbo.
The area is full of Etruscan ruins (Cerveteri, Veio), and boasts hot springs such as Stimigliano and Le Terre dei Papi, all within a short drive. The world-renowned Olgiata golf course is 4 km away, the Parco di Roma Golf Club is 25 minutes drive, and both the Parco dei Medici Golf Club in Rome and the Golf Club le Querce in Sutri are 35 minutes away. We are also just 30 minutes away from Rome's most famous beach.
That being said, many of our guests have a hard time tearing themselves away from our private paradise. It is nice to have the option of just staying home, reading a book from our library by the pool, playing croquet on a manicured lawn, picking your fruits and vegetables from our gardens and then grilling on your private terrace and watching the sun set over the Roman countryside while you enjoy what may well be your best vacation ever.
Il Sogno is in the heart of Etruria and borders on Veio Park, the Sorbo Valley and Martignano-Bracciano Park. While located within Rome city limits and close to shopping, trains, and other city amenities, Il Sogno has a tranquil countryside setting.
We are next to Rome's Lake District, which is surrounded by unspoiled park land where golf, fishing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, nature walks and birding are year-round activities. In the crystal-clear waters of Bracciano and Martignano, only electric motors are allowed, and both places abound with sailboats, kayaks, peddle boats for rent.
The other volcanic lakes, Vico and Bolsena, are worth a visit as well, and make a nice day trip, especially if you stop along the way at the small town festivals, antique shops and historical sites.
The immediate area surrounding Il Sogno is filled with shops, supermarkets, restaurants. In autumn of 2013 the express train was added making the trip to the center even shorter (24 minutes) for the same price (1 euro). As always, there is free parking at the station.
We are happy to share our favorite hikes, hidden roads to Etruscan and Roman ruins and ideas for what we think is an ideal day in an idyllic setting. We can even provide you with a picnic lunch with fruit and vegetables from our garden, cheese from the nearby farm and local wines!

"Not for us"
The Brook Cottage is idyllic, set on the edge of a meadow, with a wood and brook that runs behind it. However in practical terms because while we were there there was heavy rain and a number of thunde… More
I recently received an email from TripAdvisor for three reviews on the same day, two absolutely glowing and one not so positive. Even after reading the third, I confirmed it. Before being a B&B/vacation rental owner I did not realize that the owner can deny a review. Buyer beware as not all owners may be completely honest!
In any case, I am saddened by this review on a personal level: I invest a lot of myself into my work, trying to make sure each guest feels at home and that their needs are seen to. I began this business six years ago and have always thought of my guests as someone's family who I take care of while they are staying here because if members of my family were vacationing I would want the same for them. In some cases my guests have become like family and we have kept in contact after their visits and some have given us the pleasure of coming back to see us.
On a professional level, I am displeased. My husband and I have worked hard to provide a beautiful, well-cared for environment here at Il Sogno. Our two guest houses were painstakingly restored, furnished with care and given everything our guests need to have a nice vacation and to feel as if Il Sogno is their home away from home. We are constantly improving, updating and adding. We have five acres of land tended to not only by ourselves but a gardener who works here 30 hours weekly. We have a pool, games, etc. all for the sole use of our guests. We, the owners go the lake in summer so as to leave the pool unoccupied.
We have traveled extensively and rarely have I seen guest houses or rooms as clean as ours. We also have window screens in our guest houses, unlike many guest houses and hotels in the Mediterranean.
Like all warm-weather places, we have mosquitoes so we spray insecticide near the houses a few times in the summer season, but not too often as it's harmful to the environment. Had these guests told me that mosquitoes and spiders were ruining their time here, I would have asked the gardener to spray. A simple lack of communication.
Even though one cannot please everyone, I see this as a loss.

"Close to Rome but far from the madding crowd"
For those of you who want to have your cake and eat it - in terms of a relaxing location but within easy reach of all that Rome and its environs have to offer, then Brook Cottage leaves no box unticked.
Ideal for a family of four, or maybe two couples, the cottage located in a quite idyllic property, gives the sense of rurality and peacefulness despite being just a short train journey away from the ancient (and modern) city of Rome. Imagine a day exploring the Colosseum, having your picture taken sitting on the Spanish Steps, a lunch in the Piazza Navona then unwinding in the pool back at Brook Cottage before an exquisite evening meal in one of the local restaurants recommended by your unceasingly patient hosts - Sheryle and Adriano. That's was our experience for two weeks in July last year.
To the north of the cottage are volcanic lakes fringed with beaches where we spent the day swimming, kayaking or simply cooling off in the water; then retreating for an early evening meal in the restaurant of the adjacent agritourismo overlooking the lake. Fresh produce wonderfully cooked, a local bottle of wine and the sun going down over the lake to boot!
A short drive from the cottage and you're at the train station (parking free) where a 1euro ticket sees you into Rome in 25 minutes. After that it's up to you. We made several journeys like this balanced with relaxing days at the beach or simply lazing by the pool at our new found home. Nightly barbeques gave a sense of the rustic charm of the cottage - being away from it all but having all the comforts of home which the cottage afforded.
As for our hosts - Sheryle and Adriano, and of course their daughter Lillian - it's impossible to overstate their willingness to offer assistance that made our holiday as stress-free as possible. Booking tickets and restaurants, providing directions and offering a phone to use for those occasions when we were really stuck proved invaluable and just made our stay that more memorable.
A great location, super accommodation, fantastic hosts. What more is there to say except, if you're going to visit Rome but also want the luxury of a rural retreat then try Brook Cottage - you won't be disappointed.

"A fabulous retreat fo all the family."
We were initially attracted to Il Sogno by the photos on the website. They do not do the place full justice. From the warmth of the reception to the location of Brook Cottage, to the wonderful pool, our whole holiday was superb. With the sights of Rome in easy reach, as well as the beautiful lakes just the North ( and not forgetting Sheryl's great insider knowledge of the area) the only problem we had was persuading our daughters to leave the pool and gardens!
