Cosy one bedroom apartment situated in the historical heart of the picturesque village of Cernobbio, right on Lake Como. Fully renovated in 2011, the apartment ideally caters for two people (one bedroom with double bed), but a very comfortable double sleeper couch in the sitting room offers accommodation for another couple or two children.

Original decorated terracotta tile floors throughout, complimented with rugs and beautiful antique furniture. Modern bathroom, contemporary kitchen with rustic touches (antique stone sink and work surfaces), open plan living area featuring lounge and dining area, and outdoor terrace. TV and DVD player.

Cernobbio is a magnificent lakeside village, perfectly positioned on Lake Como (close to both Milan and Switzerland). A ferry service accesses all towns up and down the lake. Cernobbio is ideal for both a romantic weekend-for-two, or a fun family holiday. The main village is absolutely charming and filled with great restaurants, bars, and beautiful boutiques. There are also banks, a Post Office, fruit and vegetable market, bakeries and gelaterias in the main village. An outdoor playground (with a very popular merry-go-round) is a five minute walk away at the lakeside.

Como is 4 kms or two ferry stops (with breathtaking views en route) away, while Milan centre can be comfortably reached by train in 40 minutes from Como. The Swiss border is a mere 2km away and - for the cyclists and walkers amongst you - mountain climbing on Mount Bisbino and lakeside riding are at your doorstep.

The property doesn't have its own parking, however, public parking is available close by. We personally feel that a car is not really necessary as the apartment is only a short walk away from most amenities and all public transport - ferry and bus.

About this location

The Lake Como region

Lake Como (Lago di Como in Italian, also known as Lario by the locals) is a lake of glacial origin and is both the third largest lake in Italy (after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore) and - at over 400 m deep - one of the deepest lakes in Europe. This, however, enables it to undergo the most amazing colour changes - from crystal blue, through dark green, to stormy grey - which adds to its personal character and mystery, I feel.

One can easily spend a month on Lake Como, taking ones time to discover all of the towns (large and small, each unique in its own way) up and down the Lake - both along its edges and up in the surrounding hills.

It is also a perfect starting or end-point for a trip on the world famous Glacier Express train through Switzerland.

Lombardy and the Lake Como area offer holidays for all tastes (cultural, gastronomic, musical, enological, historical ... or a mix of all these) - just choose the one that most appeals!

Cernobbio truly has an ideal climate, never unbearably hot nor bitterly cold (though we do see snow in winter). Spring and summer are certainly the best months for enjoying the Lake's pleasures (energizing boat-rides, tours of the gracious villas that abut the Lake's edges, tanning on the Lido, sipping chilled aperitivi at L'Onda Bar, ...) but autumn and winter hold their own pleasures (searching for truffles and porcini mushrooms in the crisp mountain air, enjoying home-made pumpkin ravioli and a bottle of fine red in front of a blazing log-fire, local traditional Christmas markets, ...).

A trip to Cernobbio would not be complete without a visit to the majestic and luxurious Villa d'Este hotel, once the property of Caroline of Brunswick (wife of the future King of England) and now a hide-out for the rich and (at times dubiously) famous. In warm weather, I would highly recommend taking an aperitivo on the terrace (very pricey, but worth it!), followed by a walk through the memorable Italianate gardens.

If you're in the mood for a good hike, from Cernobbio you can reach Monte Bisbino, at 1325m, by way of a 17km long panoramic winding road, that offers you amazing views out over the Lake. If you get hungry along the way, I would strongly suggest a relaxed, rustic lunch at Bugone Rifugio (the views are breath-taking from where you sit) - home-cooked, family food at very reasonable prices. (Of course, if you're feeling lazy, you can do this same trip by car!)

If you're in Cernobbio at the beginning of June, do not miss the "Missoltino Day", taken from the name of a lake fish that is typically dried and then cooked. There are numerous shows and other activities, all culminating in the awarding of the "Missoltino d'Oro" to the best Missoltino chef. Lots of lakeside eating, drinking and festivity!
