About this location
The Dorset region
Lapwing Cottage is one of 11 cottages on the edge of a small village with views over fields and hills as far as King Alfred's Tower of the Stourhead Estate many miles away. It has a small garden at the back of the cottage bordering on open grassland. Two lovely country walks can be started from the cottage without the need to use the car. For those wishing to sightsee Sherborn, the prettiest town in Dorset is only a 15 minute drive away and Stourhead about half an hour. The village Pub – the Halsey Arms – a few hundred yards away serves good local pub food and real ale and many more picturesque pubs can be found within a 10 mile radius. For gourmets there is the excellent upmarket restaurant and hotel – Plumber Manor – only 15 minutes drive away.
Supermarekts can be found in Sherborn (medium sized Sainsbury), Sturminster Newton (small Coop) and Dorchester (medium sized Tescos).
Pulham (East and West) is a somewhat dispersed village and parish that lies in the Vale of Blackmoor, about 13 miles north of Dorchester, 7 miles south-west of Sturminster Newton and 8 miles south-east of Sherborne, on the B3143 road. Referred to as Poleham in the Domesday Book (1086AD), it had become Puleham by 1130 and Pullam at 1212. The present spelling of Pulham has been in use since 1244. The adjoining parishes are Glanvilles Wootton and Holwell, towards the west, and Hazelbury Bryan to the east.
