Apartment Bonheur
About the home
Apartment Bonheur is situated in a narrow, picturesque cobbled street that in a previous century would have been the commercial centre of Ceret as it then was. Today, the Rue du Commerce is largely residential, with just a smattering of small enterprises, such as a games/hunting shop, a library, an antique shop and an art gallery to remind you of its past role in the life of the town.
Deli shops, patisseries, newsagents and grocers are all within easy walking distance. You'll find any excuse you can to wander through the streets of this delightful town with its stately plane trees and its vibrant, but laid-back, combination of French and Catalan culture.
Ceret is an ideal base from which to discover this unspoilt part of the Mediterranean, offering a dramatic Pyrenean landscape for walkers and ramblers, as well as a coastline that gets ever more picturesque as you head towards the Spanish border. After your days out, exploring the nearby mountains, beaches and villages, you'll enjoy returning to the comfort of Apartment Bonheur and the evening ambience of Ceret. As most of Ceret's restaurants and bars are only a few minutes' stroll away from the apartment, you won't have to worry about drinking and driving.

Further details indoors:
Apartment Bonheur is located on the first floor, up one flight of stairs. With its thick walls and its proximity to adjacent buildings, the apartment remains comfortably cool and pleasant throughout much of the summer (bar the hottest part, for which fans are provided). All the main rooms look out on to the cobbled street, with the decorative balconies providing a good view of the marvellous Porte de France archway straddling the street at one end.
Inside, the apartment is attractively furnished, with a harmonious blend of antique and modern styles. There is a large bedroom and a smaller one, both with a double bed. The lounge is comfortable and spacious, and comes equipped with a small hi-fi system and UK Freesat TV (including a DVD player). The dining table and chairs are in a 'medieval' style, while the lounge area offers two sumptuous leather settees and a coffee table. As well as a bathroom with bath, bidet, washbasin and toilet, there is a separate cloakroom with toilet and washbasin. For self-catering, you can enjoy the benefits of a modern fitted kitchen.
Further details outdoors:
There is ample free parking just beyond the archway in "des Tins" car park.
There is a launderette (with instructions in English) just past the archway.
Wi-Fi is available for patrons of the bar just around the corner, and there is also an Internet cafe nearby.
Further details
Each bedroom has a double bed and therefore the apartment is most suited to one or two couples. If you wish, a fold-out camp bed can be made available, but this would be subject to an additional charge.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

Curving around the north-western Mediterranean from the Massif Central mountains in the north to the Pyrenees in the south, the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France is claimed to have, on average, over 300 days of sunshine a year. Along the coast, you'll find some of the finest beaches in France and, close to the Spanish border, some truly spectacular mountain scenery.
The whole area is steeped in history and culture. Prehistoric sites are scattered throughout the region and, from somewhat more recent times, there are constant reminders of the Cathars, including their magnificently preserved castles. More recently still, the area's picturesque villages and towns have attracted more than their fair share of renowned artists such as Picasso and Dali, whose legacy remains to this day in the cultural life of the local people. The Catalan language is very much alive in the more southerly parts, and you will often hear it spoken by locals going about their business.
The Ceret area
Ceret nestles cosily in the foothills of the Pyrenees. It's a delightful place, friendly and bustling, with a wonderfully shady old town overhung by huge plane trees. The streets are typically narrow and winding, opening on to small squares such as the Place des Neuf-Jets, so called because of its fountain, which is several centuries old. The presence of several charming restaurants here make this an ideal spot in which to have lunch or an evening meal.
Ceret provides a perfect mix of quiet relaxation and liveliness. You won't get bored, but neither will you be overwhelmed by tourist shops, touts or designer outlets!
Not to be missed, every Saturday, there's a large and varied market, stretching along the main street that curves around the old town, past two remnants of the medieval walls: the Porte de France and the Porte d'Espagne. The first of these is actually the gateway you can see from the windows of Apartment Bonheur.
Catalan history is never more apparent than during the annual Ceret de Toros festival when bulls are run through the main street and bullfighting takes place in the nearby arena. This festival generally happens during the second weekend of July, when Ceret gets into all-night party mode. If this kind of thing isn't for you, it's best to avoid that weekend!
On a somewhat calmer note, Ceret celebrates its folk traditions during festivals such as the Sardane, which takes place in late July, when the streets are filled with people from far and wide, taking part in the dancing. In fact, at various times throughout the summer in Ceret, you will encounter music of all kinds, ranging from Flamenco to rock, being performed on makeshift stages. On certain festival nights, you may find musical combos playing hot licks on seemingly every street corner!
