The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region
The Pyrenees, The Med and Spain From Ceret you choose whether to head East for the coast at Argeles and Collioure or whether to head West to the famous water spar town of Amelie-les-bains and further out to the Frontier with Spain over the Pyrenees with breathtaking views at Mollo. Spain can also be reached over the Pyrenees at Coustouges, Perthus and via the spectacular coastal road into the CostaBrava. Just over a ridge of the Pyrenean foothills overlooking Llauro can be seen the peak of the magnificent Mount Canigou. For many centuries this was regarded as the highest peak in the Pyrenees and was thought by ancient Catalan people to have magical powers. The sight of Canigou is certainly impressive and there are many guided walks and tours to enjoy Canigou and the surrounding Pyrenean foothills.
The colourful and exotic city of Perpignan Right on the doorstep of Les Jardins des StJacques is the city of Perpignan. It takes two minutes by car and is a lovely walk from the farmhouse. It is hard to think how anyone would want for more from a city. It is full of sophisticated shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and music clubs. There are many interesting festivals held in the city during the year. The old quarter of the city is home to several multi-cultural food markets and full of fascinating Catalan architecture. The icing on the cake is that almost at every turn, the city is full of exotic palm trees.
During the summer months, you can use a Pyrenees Orientales holiday villa as a base to enjoy beach life, or participate in a huge range of watersports, with exciting sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing, and swimming. There is also an annual summer carnival, celebrating the delicious oysters farmed in the area.
SUMMER IN COLLIOURE The small village of Collioure is an artist's paradise and is well maintained. It has all the amenities one would expect of a small town, but a greater choice of restaurants and cafes (not to mention the scores of options just a bus or car drive away). It has four municipal beaches; each of these pebbly beaches is cleaned regularly and in summer, served by a lifeguard. In addition along this indented coast, there are sheltered coves and semi-sanded beaches immediately to the north and south. A few kilometers further afield, the gravel beaches give way to sandy shores. Behind the village, through the vineyards, there are myriad walking trails that follow the contours or track ancient routes to the summits of our local mountains. Scuba diving, sailing, cycling and snorkeling are all possible from the village. During the summer months there are not only free concerts and street musicians, but top-notch artistic performances and firework displays
The ancient fishing port of Collioure, nestling between the last spurs of the Pyrénées and the warm Mediterranean sea is as pretty as a picture. It was once known for its lucrative anchovy trade then, at the beginning of the last century, the quaint houses, vine-clad slopes, sparkling blue sea and clear atmosphere captured the hearts of celebrated artists such Matisse, Derain, Dufy and Picasso, who immortalized the village in their famous Fauvist paintings. Today, you can still buy anchovies and the port is a favourite spot with painters, but the small village offers much more. It has been carefully restored, and its narrow streets and small beaches reflect the sobriquet given to this most southerly corner of France, La Côte Vermeille, the Vermillion Coast. Unlike its purpose built neighbours, Collioure is a village for all seasons: it quietens down in mid winter, but never closes. There is still a good choice of restaurants and cafés, and the market comes each Wednesday and Sunday
Argeles, has 7 km of sandy beach and 2 km of rocky coastline, with the entire resort and its little port classed as a blue flag area with clean bathing, and a beach which is cleaned daily. Argeles is officially recognised in France as a great resort for children with a vast range of activities and attractions. Adults too are well catered for with boat trips, scuba diving, sailing, kayaking, swimming pool, tennis, horse riding, archery, cycling, go-carting, walking, mini-golf, micro-lite flights and paragliding.
Ceret / Llauro area
Ceret is a picture postcard town & has been famous from the turn of the century when it was an inspiring location for modern artists such as Picasso and Mattisse. There are a many festivals during the year and the world famous modern art museum. French and Catalan can be heard in the not-to-be-missed Saturday market. Spend time in the pavement cafés, discover the old medieval streets, the restaurants, the wonderful galleries, and museums; and wander along the lovely Tech valley, which winds up to the highest southern Pyrenees peak of Canigou, often snow-covered. Ideally situated for the Cathar castles of Languedoc
Peaceful and convenient setting The house sits in the heart of the little village of Llauro with a small grocery store, a bar/grill and a post office. Just five minutes in the car brings you to the larger village of Fourques with a good butcher and baker. Just over 10minutes by car brings you to the famous town of Ceret with bank and superb food market. Just outside Ceret is a large supermarket and two more at the nearby town of le Boulou. The countryside around Llauro is laced with small villages, all with their own colour and quiet shady spots from which to watch the world go by. From the house itself you have lovely views from the large balcony out over the Roussillon countryside.
