The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

There are many interesting towns and villages to see, including the famous Carcassonne 90 minutes away, and noted for its "Cathar" history. From the coastline, up into the mountains, there are dozens of unspoilt locations to explore! The villa is in the heart of Catalan. You will not only hear french spoken but many locals speak only the Catalan language. Many of the restauants are Catalan in style.
The Languedoc-Roussillon area is the largest wine producing area in France. It is noted also for the sweet wines of Banyuls and Rivesaltes. Tours of vineyards and wine tasting and can be found within an hour of the villa.
The Spanish border is just 15 minutes away, opening up places to visit, such as the Costa Brava, Girona and Barcelona.
The climate can be warm all year around but generally, the good weather is "set in" from May to September. July can be the hottest month. Banyuls just 25km away has been described as the sunniest place in france!
Snow falls on the mountains just 25 minutes away in winter and there are spectacular walks and vistas to experience!
The area is also noted for its art history. Ceret has the National Picasso Museum in the centre, Cadequez in Spain (50 minutes away) is famous for the painter Salvador Dali and Matisse painted at the seaside harbour of Collioure. It still has many art studios situated there.
The Ceret area
Ceret is a typical traditional French town, but with a Catalan flavour to it. There are a number of good restaurants, bars and brasseries within the centre.
The market on each Saturday is the largest in the area and second to none.
In the first week of June each year, there is the famous Cherry Festival, with music, dancing, games food and wine.
Other fesivals are centred around the art history of the area.
