About this location

The Yorkshire region

Yorkshire, often described as "God's own country", has something for everyone; dramatic coastline, beautiful countryside including the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National parks, sleepy market towns, historic monuments aplenty, walking galore and bustling cities such as Leeds.

The jewel in Yorkshire's crown is undoubtedly the ancient City of York. Encircled by two and a half miles of Roman, Norman and medieval City walls, the 263 acres of old York contains extensive Roman and Viking archaeology, medieval architecture including the snickleways and Shambles, the magnificent York Minster and 20 medieval 'parish' churches, a multitude of museums (including the National Railway Museum just outside the city walls), restaurants and cafes to suit every taste, and literally hundreds of traditional pubs and modern bars.

Alongside this York has all of the activities you would expect of one of the UK's most popular tourist destinations, one of the countries finest racecourses, and a calendar full of festivals and events.

Central York

Bishophill can certainly claim to be York's quietest and most peaceful central area. Bordered securely on two sides by the imposing, ancient city walls, and on the other sides by the historic Micklegate and Skeldergate, this tranquil enclave could be many miles away from the bustling city centre which, in reality, starts just 200 or so metres away. It's just a few minutes walk to all of York's many and varied attractions. Bishophill also benefits from two excellent traditional pubs, the CAMRA heritage Golden Ball pub (25 yards from the front door), and the secluded Ackhorne, and its a short stroll to the Bishopthorpe road highstreet.
