The Yorkshire region

Whitby has become one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Yorkshire coast. With its busy harbour, quaint cobbled streets and long sandy beach it has something to offer everyone. The town is dominated by the cliff top ruins of its 13th century Abbey and famous for its connections with Captain Cook and Dracula. There are many good restaurants and numerous very good fish and chips shops including the celebrated Magpie Cafe.

A visit to the area would not be complete without a trip to the North Yorkshire Moors (the spectacular scenery was recently featured on Richard Wilson's 'Great British Drives' programme). The NYMR steam railway operates between Whitby and Pickering taking in some tremendous scenery which featured in the popular television series "Heartbeat" and the James Herriot books

"Wow - fabulous house!"

This was a fabulous house to stay in - couldn't have asked for any better. All rooms are large and beautifully furnished. There is everything you need for your stay and way more besides. I stayed with 8 other people and every one of them agreed that it was a stunning place to stay and would all love to go back again. Can't rate it highly enough!

"Great House and Great Location"

Well appointed house for crockery, cooking utensils etc. Beds and bed linen clean and good quality. Cleaning materials, bin bags, salt and pepper etc all there on arrival. Heating/HW system very effective and easy to use - we needed it!
Two reception rooms worked very well with 3 families. Kitchen is large but can get cosy when cooking as the lovely and necessarily large table/chairs takes up a fair space. Bedrooms all adequate to large and having 4 bathrooms in total meant cleanliness never a problem !
Location is fab. 50 yards from lovely bakers with tearooms, a pub serving hand pump ales (albeit there are even lovelier pubs (many) within 10-15mins stroll), and plenty of other shops of all varieties. We used Sainsburys (just out on the A171 - only recently opened) for our big shop but there are Heron Foods and Fultons nearby as well as two local butchers, a Poundland for any cleaning stuff and more besides.
We walked the 7 miles down to Robin Hoods Bay with 4 kids from 10-14yrs - not too stenuous but very muddy/slippy on a well signed mostly cliff top path - we then demolished the fish and chips after a fairly lengthy wait - worth it!
We also walked north to Sandsend (couple of miles each way on the beach) and enjoyed the cracking cafe there - huge trencherman slice of home made bakewell tart was ample reward. We had New Years Day lunch at the White Horse and Griffin across the bridge turn second left - great food at great value prices and well-kept Timothy Taylor Landlord.
I spent a fab couple of hours at a bitingly cold Whitby Town FC - football as it should be - they prevailed 1-0 against Blyth Spartans and I downed two piping hot cups of Bovril - surrounded by 583 other hardy souls (£9 Adult Admission!).
We ate and drank very well in Whitby - I suppose you could eat poorly if you work at it but that would be a poor choice.
We didnt have time for the beautiful seafront cinema/theatre or even the Steam Train from Whitby or walking on the beautiful North Yorkshire moors - next time. Whitby isnt twee or overly gentrified but it is vibrant, historic, interesting and set beautifully - worth a few days of anybody time methinks - we will likely be back.

"Perfect house for a family celebration."

Spacious, beautifully decorated and really well equipped. When there are 11 staying great to have 2 living rooms so there is always the possibility of peace and quiet. Everything in the advert is exactly as described. The bedrooms are all lovely and the beds very comfortable.

Brilliantly situated in a quiet area of Whitby but also very central for shopping and climbing the 199 steps to the Abbey.

Booking, directions and information, and return of deposit was seamless - Anne was particularly helpful and also concerned when we had a family illness that could have prevented us getting there.

Don't miss the experience if you are thinking of booking.

"Best house we've rented in 10 years"

This really is a great house. Lovely rooms throughout, well decorated and furnished, with everything you need for a weekend escape. In a great spot on the north side of Whitby harbour on a quiet street, just a gentle stroll into Whitby or to the beach. Highly recommended.

"Fantastic house"

We booked this accommodation for the Goth Weekend in Whitby. We were a party of eight and couldn't have been more delighted when we pulled up to this lovely house. The first plus to the house was allocated parking for three vehicles in front of the property. As it was so busy that weekend heaven knows where we would have had to put the cars without this.
The house sleeps twelve so eight of us rattled around easily without feeling crammed in. There are two sitting rooms although we didn't even have to use the back one as there was more than adequate seating for all of us in the front lounge. If we had been there longer it would have been nice to be able to spread out and if you are taking children it would be ideal for them for x box, games etc as wifi is supplied as well.
We spent a lot of time in the beautiful kitchen which had a massive central table which just calls out for eating and drinking around it. Every utensil pot, pan, glass you could possibly need provided for you in this room. High quality spec appliances and even a DAB radio for music. In the utility room off the kitchen there is a washer, dryer and fridge freezer and most importantly - a downstairs loo and shower.

Upstairs there are six bedrooms, three doubles and three twin. Everybody commented on how comfortable the mattresses were and the quality of the bedding. There are three further bathrooms up stairs. One en suite and two other family bathrooms one on each floor.

House lovely and cosy for such a large place, in fact even with no heating on at night I had to have bedroom window open.

Outside there is a small (but perfectly formed) courtyard with wooden seating and table, would be lovely in the summer for a barbecue.

What more can I say about this gorgeous place....from the first contact Anne the owner promptly answered emails and telephone calls giving us complete confidence in the booking. We were very sad to leave and the only regret we had was not booked it for the week instead of just the weekend.

I cannot recommend this place enough. It is so central to Whitby you can be on the front in less than five minutes but tucked away in a small square so just away from the hustle bustle and noise. Get booking ! This place worked out much cheaper than an ordinary bed and breakfast and we got a standard much higher than we ever expected.

"Beautiful house in a great location."

This house is spacious, clean, well equipped and in a great central location, ideal for exploring Whitby (we didn't use our cars all week). I can't think of any negatives and would heartily recommend this property.

"Beautiful house, perfect location."

The Moorings exceeded our expectations, lovely furnishings, plenty of space, great for large groups. It's a perfect location, only a 5minute walk to the harbour.
We will definitely return!

"Great location, very high standard accommodation"

A group of six old university friends stayed here for a long weekend for our annual get together. This was an ideal property with plenty of room, good sized bedrooms, nicely decorated and furnished and well appointed with all the facilities we could wish for. Fitted our bill perfectly - a room each, two good sized comfortable living rooms and kitchen for socialising, a nice outside area also to sit and eat, private parking and easy walking access in minutes to all the amenities of Whitby. This property would easily accommodate larger groups in comfort too - either a bigger group of friends of maybe two families holidaying together. Immaculately clean and the owner very easy and straight to deal with. Very nice base for a seaside holiday break in the lovely North Yorkshire moors.

"Fabulous house in a brilliant location."

We had an excellent holiday staying at ' The Moorings' for a week in July 2014. The superb accommodation is ideally situated for both the beach and Whitby itself. The house is extremely well appointed and very comfortable. Parking opposite the house is a definite plus as parking in and around Whitby is now either disc or pay and display. We managed to park 4 cars quite easily. There is a beautiful bakery very close and I can recommend Becketts on Skinner Street 2 mins away for coffee and cake! This was our first visit to ' The Moorings'. We have stayed in Whitby a number of times over the past few years but this is by far the best accommodation we have been in. We have already booked for next year!

"Extremely comfortable, stylish and well equipped house in great location"

Absolutely loved this house! It is a fantastic size and perfect layout for a large party and is beautifully presented, a lot of thought has clearly gone into making it a perfect holiday home.
The kitchen was stunning with its glossy units and granite worksurfaces and had everything you could possibly want away from home. Two stylish reception rooms with loads of seating meant there was plenty of room for everyone to spread out and relax and the outdoor space with table, chairs and BBQ was well used even though the weather was not the best!

The bedrooms were all lovely - comfortable and spacious with plenty of storage and there were ample stylish bathrooms to go around.
The three parking spaces directly opposite were an absolute must as the house is right in the heart of Whitby although once parked the cars didn't see much action as everything is within walking distance.
This was our first visit to Whitby and we loved it and were really impressed with everything it had to offer. The Moorings is definitely the best holiday home we have stayed in and we will definitely be returning!
