The Dalmatia region
The centres of the cities of Split and Trogir are under UNESCO protection and the islands of Brac, Hvar, Vis as well as the Makarska seashore with its lovely sites, are renowned tourist attractions.
Because of their beauty and the quality of the tourist services they provide, they have earned respectable positions on the world scene in terms of popularity, quality and beauty.
Split is the jewel of the Mediterranean. Its 1700 years of history gave it rich heritage, which you can feel, see and touch. The city was founded by the emperor Diocletian who had built a palace strategically placed near the ancient city of Salona, on a perfect cove, at the foot of the Marjan hill.
Diocletian lived with his family, servants and a small army at the palace, which soon became a city of its own. In the following centuries, Split was populated first by the citizens of Salona that had fled from Avars and Slavs. Later, the town expanded outside the walls of the palace and eventually it grew into the second largest city in modern day Croatia.
Split had been under the authorities of Croatian kings, Hungarian and Venetian administration, French rulers and the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. During all that time, Split remained the cultural center of the region, keeping many remains of its rich history.
Diocletian’s palace – now the heart of Split is certainly the most interesting part of the old city. There, you can find remains of the emperor’s prized possessions such as Egyptian sphinxs, and traces that everyday life left on this magnificent 1700 years old palace.
The palace is still inhabited today, and you’ll also notice that many of the shops, cafes and restaurants in the old part of Split reside in walls of the palace, some of them still keeping the ancient roman ambiance.
The warm Mediterranean climate in Split is great for summer vacations, check out the weather forecast for the next week in Split on the right.
One of the best things you could do while enjoying your time in Split is going swimming and sunbathing at one of the many beaches along the coast. To name a few, there’s Bacvice beach, in the first cove from the city center - near the main train station; followed by Ovcice beach in the next cove, further along the coast, there's the Znjan beach on the south part of the city. Also, there's Bene beach on Marjan hill, Obojena beach near the south slopes of Marjan, and many more.
All of the beaches in Split are popular among the locals and each one is special in its own way, but if you should choose only one beach to visit, it would be the sandy Bacvice beach. It is only a 5 minute walk away from apartment Karla. Bacvice beach is home to a unique sport – Picigin, which has gotten so popular that it has its own world championship.

"A clean flat not far from beaches or the town"
We stayed at Apartment Karla in Split in early September - two of us,
two teenagers and one baby. The apartment was plenty big enough, nice
and clean, and with a kitchen to make our food. We wanted to go
somewhere with beaches in the day, and somewhere interesting to walk
around at night, and Split was great. The apartment was five minutes
from several great beaches, and about fifteen from the historic town
centre. The host of the apartment was delightful, ordering us pizza
for our late arrival, and answering any questions we had with good
local knowledge. He recommended a great Croatian restaurant. My
partner and I also miss the coffee at Café Smile, an unprepossessing
café, but with delicious (and inexpensive) coffee. We had a great
time, and were we to return to Split would stay there again.

"Excellent apartment, perfect location, happy customers"
Apartment Karla is a nice apartment, with a very good location for our needs. It sleeps 5, in three separate rooms, and has ample space for a family. Equipped with aircondition (very important! :-)), dish-washer and washing machine etc.
The apartment is a short walk of 300m from the beach, and about 500m from the city centre/old town.
The beach, although it is in the middle of the city, is nice, clean, well suited for children and loved by the locals.
There is little noise, apart from the traffic, but as the bedrooms face away from the traffic, this is not a problem.
The apartment is the proprietor's home, that they vacate during the summer, to go live in the islands. This gives the apartment a touch of "home", as it it obvious that you are living in someones home.
The place was spotless when we arrived, had plenty of towels & linen, and we had a free clean/change of towels & linen mid-term.
The proprietor is very friendly, very helpful and very flexible, helping us with transportation, tips for things to do and see etc.
All in all - a very positive experience, recommended for families up to 5.
