The Paris/Ile de France region
Why not try the canal Saint Martin !
The Canal Saint-Martin, imagined by Louis XIV, begun under Napoleon 1st, ended in 1825, remains one of the most picturesque and, paradoxically, the least-known townscapes in Paris. For many years, the canal banks were a hive of intense activity, with several dozen barges transporting sand and coal every day. Locks were activated by hand.
Today, killed by the road transport, the canal does not see more than two or three barges a day. It almost died for a second time when, at the beginning of the 70s, the council of Paris adopted a project of a four-track highway to cover it. The president of the time looked favourably on this project, but fortunately it never came to fruition. As a result, the Parisians rediscovered the canal, its nine locks, its standing banks of trees, its small public gardens, the metal bridges to the Venetian or bends, the plans of water sometimes higher than the road itself, which together comprise one of the most romantic landscapes of the capital.
A long walk along the Canal will take you on one end to the Parc de la Villette, la cité de la Musique and Musée des ciences , on the other to the nice Port de l'Arsenal, near Bastille, le Marais, l'Hotel Sully and the House of Victor Hugo.
Central Paris area
This area of Paris is lively and increasingly trendy. Rather than becoming a ghetto for the rich, it remains lively and democratic with its numerous open-air food stalls and restaurants as well as its art galleries and its true village life. Some places are pedestrianised on weekends, and on sunny evenings the quays are full of young people enjoying a picnic or playing music in a friendly atmosphere
The charming apartment is located in a small street with relatively little traffic, yet just a stone's throw from the canal and 2 minutes' walk from the lively Faubourg St Martin. The 4 different metro lines and numerous bus lines will bring you almost anywhere in Paris within less than half an hour. This is an ideal base from which to explore the centre of Paris as well as the beautiful provincial towns of Strasbourg, Orleans, Reims, Lyon, Lille or even London and Amsterdam (thanks to the proximity of the Eurostar station).
