The Paris/Ile de France region
Paris is the capital of France and the country's largest city. It is situated on the river Seine, in northern France, at the heart of the Île-de-France region (also known as the "Paris Region"; French: Région parisienne). The city of Paris within its administrative limits (largely unchanged since 1860) has an estimated population of 2,167,994 (January 2006). The Paris unité urbaine (or urban area) extends well beyond the administrative city limits and has an estimated population of 9.93 million (in 2005). The Paris aire urbaine (or metropolitan area) has a population of nearly 12 million, and is one of the most populated metropolitan areas in Europe."
An important settlement for more than two millennia, Paris is today one of the world's leading business and cultural centres, and its influence in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities. According to 2005 estimates, the Paris urban area is Europe's biggest city economy, and is fifth in the world's list of cities by GDP.
The Paris Region, with US$731.3 billion, produced more than a quarter of the gross domestic product (GDP) of France in 2007. The Paris Region hosts 37 of the Fortune Global 500 companies in several business districts, notably La Défense, the largest purpose-built business district in Europe. Paris also hosts many international organizations such as UNESCO, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the informal Paris Club.
Central Paris / 4th / IVe - Ile Saint Louis area
Le Marais is a district in Paris, France, traditionally a bourgeois area, but also well-known historically.
It spreads across parts of the 3rd and 4th arrondissements in Paris (on the Rive Droite, or Right Bank, of the Seine).
It is a place for visitors to stroll through when the eye tires of the French capital's traditional elegance, its wide boulevards and heroic esplanades. To visit the Marais is to leave the 19th-century Paris of Haussmann, Louis Napoleon and the Belle Epoque and enter a different, modern city.
The Marais is fashionable and vivid district. Rich and poor, aristocrat and artisan, still live cheek by jowl much as they did in the 16th century. Restaurants, boutiques and antique shops jostle for space along the narrow sidewalks with grubby little epicentres, musty tailor's shops and plebeian cafes almost unchanged since Balzac's day.
There is a constant bustle of life in the Marais not found in many of the more elegant parts of the city and a hint of mystery, too.
Sometimes you will stumble on an elegant 18th-century palace built in golden stone. Other times, you may find yourself in a Dickensian world of grimy workshops and slummish apartments, a troglodyte universe that seems not to have changed for centuries, a few feet away from the cars and delivery vans on the street outside.
Most important sites to visit: Church Saint-Merri Church Notre-Dame-des-Blancs-Manteaux Hôtel de Sens Place des Vosges, including the home of Victor Hugo and café Ma Bourgogne Musée Cognacq-Jay Musée Picasso National Archives, including the Hôtel de Soubise and the Hôtel de Rohan Carnavalet Museum Hôtel de Sully
