The Paris/Ile de France region

Historic centre for artists over the century, the cultural life of Paris is incomparable. A city full of new delights to be discovered every day.

Central Paris / 14th / XIVe area

Located in central Paris, you will experience real Parisian living in the Quartier Daguerre. Buy your croissants fresh each morning from any one of a choice of five local boulangeries, or take your morning coffee in the cafe and just people watch. On Sundays, the roads in the Quartier are closed to through traffic and families take to the street, to "flaner" - stroll about.

There are several weekly markets in the immediate area, for both food and arts and crafts.

See a film at one of several local cinemas - look out for English speaking films being shown in "version originale V.O " which retain the dialogue in English.

For those seeking a more vibrant nightlife, try the adjacent quartier Gaite with its numerous theatres and venues, all of which can be reached easily on foot.

The 14th arrondissement has been the home of artists for centuries. Rue Daguerre is named after Louis Daguerre the inventor of the daguerrotype one of the earliest photographic processes, and there remain strong connections to the worlds of photography and art nearby.
The Fondation Cartier modern art gallery is a few minutes walk from the apartment, as is the Fondation Henri Cartier Bresson, with its visiting photographic exhibitions.
Each spring the Mairie organises an open studio weekend throughout the arrondissement, where artists welcome visitors to view their work .

For those of a stronger constitution, visit the Paris catacombs in Place Denfert Rochereau, or see the tombs of Jean Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Samuel Beckett and Serge Gainsbourg in the Montparnasse Cemetery.

The Tour Montparnasse with its fabulous views of Paris is a 10 minute walk away, as is the Jardin du Luxembourg, favourite park for Parisians to see and be seen on Sundays.

Getting around Paris from the Rue Lalande couldn't be easier.
Choose from a range of local buses, and several Metro and RER lines, from the local stations Denfert Rochereau and Montparnasse, which will take you all over the city on direct routes to the Latin Quarter and Saint-Germain des Près, to the wonderful Musee d'Orsay and across the River Seine to the Hotel de Ville, the Pompidou Centre and Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre and the Place de la Concorde on the edge of the Tuileries Gardens, the Opéra Garnier and the majestic church of the Madeleine, northwards to the nightlife area of Pigalle and further still to Abbesses, close to the Sacre Coeur, set in the centre of the artists' quarter of Montmartre.

Also easily achieved by direct travel from the apartment are visits to the highlights of tourist Paris: climb the Eiffel Tower, visit Napoleon's tomb at Les Invalides and and don't miss the great Arc de Triomphe which stands at the head of the famous Champs Elysees, where you can also find the nearby Grand and Petit Palais, homes of internationally renowned permanent and touring exhibitions.

Retail therapy is within easy reach too. The Art Nouveau splendours of department stores Galeries Lafayette and Printemps on the Grands Boulevards and the stylish shopping at Sevres Babylone and Rue du Bac are readily accessible by direct bus, RER or metro, as are the modern shops and sports complex at Bercy, and at St. Denis-Porte de Paris is the magnificent Stade de France, world class venue for football, rugby, athletics, concerts and many other events.

And for something completely different ride the 88 bus westward to the ultra modern Parc Andre Citroen on the left bank of the Seine where you can take a trip in the moored Eutelsat gas balloon for panoramic views over the city.

For daytrips from Paris there are regular mainline trains from the Gare Montparnasse to Chartres, Versailles and Rambouillet.

For the fit and intrepid traveller the recently launched Velib scheme of bicycle hire is reasonably priced and fun to try - there are several Velib stands in the area.

More detailed travel and tourist information will be available for you at the apartment.

Guestbook for Lalande

Lovely apartment in an excellent location for exploring Paris. Good local shopping, tended to eat in which was very easy. Our fifth time in Paris and the best ever. Monica and Terry, UK

Lindsay, merci beaucoup. After driving around France for three weeks prior to our stay in Paris it was a real treat to find a home away from home at your wonderful apartment. This was our first stay in the City of Light and we must come back to see all those things we didn't have time to see. A truly memorable stay from two grateful Aussies. Debra and Graham, Australia

This is the perfect location for a week, or more in Paris. We know Paris very well from years of visiting but have found this neighbourhood really lovely. - Paul, UK

Wonderful flat, quiet, great location, well equipped. We visit Paris on average once a year and would not consider staying in hotels again after this. Simply perfect. Peter and Margie, Frankfurt, Germany

Thank you for a wonderful few days in your great apartment. With all those excellent transport links it was the perfect base for getting around Paris. The local area is so full of interest too, all the food shops, cafes and markets and not many tourists! The flat was warm, quiet and comfortable, and secure too - an important feature for a woman travelling alone. Altogether a real treat. Can't wait to come back! = Liz, UK.
