Home description

This is le vrai Paris! Ask any Parisien where they would like to live and ultra-chic Monceau will always be on their list- and pourquoi pas? It has everything...

Parc Monceau, unknown to most visitors, is just a short stroll away. Built by the Duke of Burgundy in 1769, it became a park in 1860. Since then Monet has painted it, newly weds are photographed amongst its faux Roman and Egyptian ruins, children play, joggers jog, and local residents gather to enjoy the beauty and calm.

In addition to the park, you are right at rue de Levis, one of the best year-round street markets in Paris. You can find everything you need for a picnic, a sumptuous ready-made meal at home, or the makings of your own feast. Outstanding charcuteries, poissonnerie, fromagerie, boulangerie, the best wine shops, bakeries, chocolates- it's all just a few steps from the front door.

The Paris/Ile de France region

Paris is the capital city of France. Situated on the River Seine, in northern France, at the heart of the Île-de-France region ("Région parisienne"). The City of Paris has an estimated population of 2 million within its limits. The Paris unité urbaine is an area of unbroken urban growth that extends well beyond the administrative city limits and has a population of 10 million.

An important settlement for more than 2000 years, Paris is today one of the world's leading cultural centres, and its influence in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities..

Paris is the most popular tourist destination in the world, with over 30 million foreign visitors per year. There are numerous iconic landmarks among its many attractions, along with world famous institutions and popular parks.

Central Paris / 17th / XVIIe area

Parc Monceau is a public park situated in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, France, at the junction of Boulevard de Courcelles, Rue de Prony and Rue Georges Berger. At the main entrance is a rotunda.

The park was established by Phillippe d'Orléans, Duke of Chartres, a cousin of the king. He started buying land on which to establish the garden in 1769, and employed Louis Carrogis Carmontelle to design the gardens. He was a close friend of the Prince of Wales, later George IV, and a lover of all things English. As a result, his aim was to create an informal English-style garden in the middle of Paris. By 1778, through successive purchases, the garden had grown to 12 hectares. It became known as the Folie de Chartres.

The park is unusual in France due to its "English" style: its informal layout, curved walkways and randomly-placed statues distinguish it from the more traditional, French-style garden. It also includes a collection of scaled-down architectural features — including an Egyptian pyramid, a Chinese fort, a Dutch windmill, and Corinthian pillars. A number of these are masonic references, reflecting the fact that Philippe d'Orléans was a leading freemason. The park includes statues of famous French figures including Guy de Maupassant, Frédéric Chopin, Charles Gounod, Ambroise Thomas and Edouard Pailleron.

During the French revolution of 1793 the Duke was executed by guillotine, and the garden was taken into public ownership. The Farmer's General Enclosure of Paris surrounded the park. At this time, the rotunda was built by Claude Nicolas Ledoux.

Le Parc Monceau Claude Monet (1876)In 1797, it was the site of the first silk parachute jump, when André-Jacques Garnerin jumped from a Montgolfier hot air balloon, landing in the park where a large crowd was gathered.

The garden was purchased by the city of Paris in 1860. Half of the land was sold for the construction of new houses. Thanks to Baron Haussmann, the other half was preserved as green space and became a public park, inaugurated by Napoleon III on 13 August 1861.

Claude Monet painted a series of three paintings of the park in the spring of 1876. He painted two further paintings of the park in 1878. Hector Berlioz was also fond of the park.

Today, the park has play areas for children, and remains very popular with local residents and their families.

The entrance to Paris Métro station Monceau is located at the park's main entrance on Boulevard de Courcelles.

Further details indoors:
The apartment is tucked away on a tiny side street, providing a quiet haven after a day (or night!) in the city.

Once inside you will find a bright, well laid out and inviting pied a terre. The apartment has windows on both sides which provide light throughout the day.

The wide plank, herringbone parquet floors date the apartment to sometime before 1875 and some of the antique furniture is from the same era.

Original ceiling moulding adorn the main rooms of the flat.

The entry foyer of the apartment has a large storage area for extra linens, towels, coats, suitcases and more. It's a great spot to drop your bags after a day shopping around the street market.

This foyer leads directly into a living room with large windows, an antique armoire and bookcase (with plenty of guide books about Paris) as well as a traditional, French gold mirror over the fireplace.

We've also added some modern touches such as a very comfortable sofa that converts to a bed for two and a television with a DVD player. We've even stocked an eclectic collection of movies.

One of the rare features of this apartment is the large dining room.

Bright and sunny, the dining room has a lovely antique table making it just right for enjoying a meal at home or some coffee and a fresh croissant in the morning.

There is also desk in this room with a permanent, broadband linked computer.

We have opened the wall between dining room and the kitchen making the area even more luminous.

The very well equipped kitchen has all of the conveniences you would need to prepare anything from light snacks to sumptuous meals (made with a fresh selection of ingredients from the rue de Levis marché).

The bedroom is accessible either by walking through the living room or by going through the kitchen area to the bathroom.

This provides the utmost in privacy should there be someone sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room.

Our cosy bedroom has a comfortable queen sized bed, ready to fall into at the end of a busy day.

It's also a lovely room to wake up in as it has a window directly across from the bed.

For your convenience, we have a classic armoire to store your belongings in, reading lights on either side of the bed and an alarm clock (although we hope you have come for a relaxing vacation and not use it too much).

The bright combined toilet and bathroom have all the modern amenities needed.

The over sized shower head provides wonderful morning and if you look closely you will notice that the white rectangular tiles look very familiar...(think of the Paris metro stations if you have been here before)

Come and see for yourself the magic of Magnifique Monceau...it's all waiting for you.

Glen & Vicki Albright - Rochester, IN, USA 28 July 2006
• We had a very interesting time in Paris. Your history is amazing with all of the monuments and
museums. We walked most places. We live in the country, so being in a big city was quite
different but enjoyable. The Eiffel tower being lit up was beautiful. We have many pictures to
take back to the USA.
Wayne & Kaaren - Toronto, CA 14 August 2006
• We have been to Paris several times but this is the first time we rented an apartment (vs. hotel
stay). What a fabulous idea! Thank you for your hospitality. We really felt at home here and
enjoyed living in this neighbourhood – so lively and colourful! Being so close to the metro has
been excellent and being able to contact home via Internet was such a blessing being away
for so long. The apartment flooded with sunlight with the windows open so we could hear the
Parisian street noise! Paris in the anytime is always wonderful and we were glad to have
stayed here this trip. Thank you for providing such a lovely home away from home!
Summer & Jill 19 August 2006
• After travelling to seven countries in 30 days, this beautiful apartment was straight out of our
dreams. We loved the small town atmosphere, the welcoming people, and the feel of a home
away from home. One of our most favourite past times was cooking dinner after shopping on
the Parisian streets. Italia was great for take out and La Familia was nice for lunch. Although
many of the stores were closed due to holidays and rain, we found a variety of places that “hit
the spot”. Trois Pièces was a nice bar close to home. The internet was fantastic to reach home
and do some research on new places to visit. This has been a fantastic experience. I hope to
revisit. Thanks Preston for showing us the ropes. This was a great way to be a part of Paris for
our 1st visit.
Lori, Don & Kirsten - Ontario, Canada 25 August 2006
• Perfect location. We had a wonderful time! This was a beautiful city to visit. We will be back!
Having the Internet and computer were fantastic bonuses. Our daughter has been to Paris
many times and was thrilled with our location. Thank you for the wonderful stay.
Lynn & James - Wilmington, DE, USA 23 September 2006
• We were married on September 16, 2006 and spent the very next night here. The location is
perfect, close to the metro and the market place. The market is an amazing place with
everything you could ask for from dinner to clothing or even an electric converter. The
apartment is comfortable and relaxing. We also took a car to Mont St. Michel and the
Normandy coast. This was my 1st time in Paris and my husband’s second time. It was a great
stay. Our only concern is that the street was a little loud for two people from the suburbs. All in
all it was a great stay.
Anna & Kim - Baltimore, MD, USA 7 October 2006
• We had a fantastic stay. Apartments are the way to go. Perfect location with metro just up the
street and the market one street over. The Laundromat around the corner is much easier than
the washer in the apartment! We liked having Internet access. Thanks for the great time!
Shobha, Manju & Purnima - New Jersey, USA 14 October 2006
• The location of the apartment, just perfect. Every amenity is in walking distance – metro,
market, restaurants, bank, Laundromat, shops, etc. Having the computer and access to the
Internet was definitely an added bonus. Having Patrick an English speaking person that met
us upon arrival was absolutely great. All of the above contributed to us having a fantastic
vacation in Paris, this beautiful city. Thank you to Gail for this place that allowed us to have a
great time.
Sherman & Debi - Baltimore, MD, USA 20 October 2006
• My husband and I really enjoyed Paris. The apartment was quite convenient to the metro and
we loved the fresh bread in the mornings!
Amber & Stephen Grigsby - Dallas, TX, USA 30 October 2006
• My husband and I loved the apartment and our first trip to Paris. The shopping, the food, and
the sites were all amazing. Coming back to the apartment after an all day affair was so nice to
“go home”. We thank you so much for all of your hospitality; the apartment was very roomy
and clean, just perfect. Having the Internet was priceless! Thanks again and this made our
honeymoon complete!
Lois, Jim & Christine Colburn December 2006
• Gail, another great stay. The area is fabulous and gives you the idea of what it’s like to live
here, the kitchen was great for cooking also. Until next time!
