The Paris/Ile de France region
Paris is the capital city of France. Situated on the River Seine, in northern France, at the heart of the Île-de-France region ("Région parisienne"). The City of Paris has an estimated population of 2 million within its limits. The Paris unité urbaine is an area of unbroken urban growth that extends well beyond the administrative city limits and has a population of 10 million.
An important settlement for more than 2000 years, Paris is today one of the world's leading cultural centres, and its influence in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities..
Paris is the most popular tourist destination in the world, with over 30 million foreign visitors per year. There are numerous iconic landmarks among its many attractions, along with world famous institutions and popular parks.
Central Paris / 18th / XVIIIe - Montmartre area
Montmartre, famous area for artists, is actually a hill 130 metres high, in the north of Paris in the 18th arrondissement, a part of the Right Bank, primarily known for the white-domed Basilica of the Sacré Cœur on its summit and as a nightclub district. The other, older, church on the hill is Saint Pierre de Montmartre, which claims to be the location at which the Jesuit order of priests was founded. Many artists had studios or worked around the community of Montmartre such as Salvador Dalí, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh.
The style of contemporary montmartre is captured in the words of the song La Bohème (1965), by popular singer-songwriter Charles Aznavour, in a Montmartre that has ceased to exist: Je ne reconnais plus/Ni les murs, ni les rues/Qui ont vu ma jeunesse/En haut d'un escalier/Je cherche l'atelier/Dont plus rien ne subsiste/Dans son nouveau décor/Montmartre semble triste/Et les lilas sont morts ('I no longer recognize/Neither the walls nor the streets/That had seen my youth/At the top of a staircase/I look for an atelier/Of which nothing survives/In its new décor/Montmartre seems sad/And the lilacs are dead'). The song is a farewell to what, according to Aznavour, were the last days of Montmartre as a site of bohemian activity.
The Musée de Montmartre is in the house where the painter Maurice Utrillo lived and worked in a second-floor studio. The mansion in the garden at the back is the oldest hotel on Montmartre, and one of its first owners was Claude Roze, also known as Roze de Rosimond, who bought it in 1680. Roze was the actor, who replaced Molière, and like his predecessor, died on stage. The house was Pierre-Auguste Renoir's first Montmartre address and many other names moved through the premises.
Just off the top of the butte, Espace Dalí showcases surrealist artist Salvador Dalí's work. Nearby, day and night, tourists visit such sights as the artists in Place du Tertre and the cabaret du Lapin Agile. Many renowned artists are buried in the Cimetière de Montmartre and the Cimetière Saint-Vincent.
The movie Amélie is set in an exaggeratedly quaint version of contemporary Montmartre.
Montmartre is an officially designated historic district with limited development allowed in order to maintain its historic character.
A funicular railway, the Funiculaire de Montmartre, operated by RATP, ascends the hill from the south while the Montmartre Bus circles the hill.

Definitely THE way to go!!! In preparation for our stay in Paris, we investigated staying at a hotel and discovered that it was very hard to find a place that was not triple our budget for the stay.
We ended up getting an incredible apartment from Gail Boisclair. She was a delight to work with while planning our stay, always responding quickly to every question we had. We used email to communicate and I always had an answer from her within a business day of asking. That was great taking into account the 7 hour difference from Texas to Paris.
She knows her city, too. When we arrived, there was a great three ring binder in the apartment with an abundance of accurate information on places to go and things to do.
Once, I could not get the Internet access to work. The person who met us at the apartment upon arrival had given me instructions, but I heard, but did not listen to her carefully enough and had to call Gail to remind me. Gail was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable about what needed to be done and gave me the two second solution right away.
All in all, she made our stay so very easy in everything she did for us while we were there.
We stayed at her Artist Corner. It was situated in the heart of residential Paris and VERY convenient to all the food markets we could need. There is even a fantastic pizza place a block away. Walk down the hill and turn left at the corner. You can not miss it.
The apartment is also a very short walk to the bus stop that will get you right down into Paris. It was Very convenient!
