The Paris/Ile de France region

Paris, the City of Lights, is the most visited city in the world for a reason - from the world-renown museums, a plethora of culinary delights, shop til you drop, and of course famous landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Opera.

Central Paris

Around the Marais:

No one word can really sum up the Marais: it’s an area packed full of rich history, lined with specialty boutiques, as well as a buzzing café scene. It’s certainly the place to be on a Sunday when it really comes to life as the streets are closed to traffic and the shops are open.

‘Le Marais’ literally translates to ‘the marsh’ in French as it used to be a marshy terrain (it’s slightly nicer now!). It was cleaned up in the 12th century and early in the 13th century when the Order of the Temple (you might recall the Knights Templar being referred to in the Da Vinci Code) set up shop in the north of the Marais. Many other religious institutions followed, some of whom are remembered today by their street signs in the Marais such as: Rue Blancs-Manteaux, and Rue Sainte-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie.

From the 13th to the 17th century, the aristocrats and rich moved in leaving behind grand mansions, referred to as hôtel particulars, with the grandest functioning as museums and libraries today. King Henri IV also created Place des Vosges (was called Place Royale) in this era, and as you can probably guess by the name, it was primarily for the royals to prance about in!
