The Paris/Ile de France region
Paris is the capital and largest city in France, situated on the river Seine, in northern France, at the heart of the Île-de-France region (or Paris Region, French: Région parisienne). The city of Paris, within its administrative limits largely unchanged since 1860, has an estimated population of 2,193,031 (January 2007), but the Paris metropolitan area has a population of 11,836,970 (January 2007), and is one of the most populated metropolitan areas in Europe.
An important settlement for more than two millennia, Paris is today one of the world's leading business and cultural centres, and its influences in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities. In 2009 and 2010 Paris was ranked among the three most important and influential cities in the world, among the first three "European cities of the future" – according to research published by the Financial Times – and among the top ten most liveable cities in the world according to the British review Monocle. Paris also ranks among the 10 greenest European cities in 2010. Paris hosts the headquarters of many international organizations such as UNESCO, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the informal Paris Club.
The Central Paris / 4th / IVe - Ile Saint Louis area
Today's Marais
Steet artist reproducing Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring on the floor (2005).
From that day on, the Marais has been one of Paris' main localization for art galleries. Following its rehabilitation, the Marais have become a fashionable district, home to many trendy restaurants, fashion houses and hype galleries.
The neighbourhood has experienced a growing gay presence since the 1980s, as evidenced by the existence of many gay cafés, nightclubs, cabarets and shops. These establishments are mainly concentrated in the southwestern portion of the Marais, many on or near the streets Sainte-Croix de la Bretonnerie and Vieille du Temple.
The Marais is also known for the strong Chinese community it hosts. The history of the community has started during World War I. At that time, France needed workers to replace its at-war soldiers and China decided to send a few thousands of its citizens-at the one condition that they would not take part of the war. After the 1918's victory, some of them have decided to stay in Paris, specifically living around the current rue au Maire. Nowadays, mostly working in jewelery and leather-related products, the Marais' Chinese community has settled in the north of the district, particularly in the surrounding of Place de la République. Right next to it, on the rue du Temple, is the Chinese Church of Paris.
Centre Georges Pompidou ( also known as the Pompidou Centre in English) is a complex in the Beaubourg area of the 4th arrondissement of Paris, near Les Halles, rue Montorgueil and the Marais. It was designed in the style of high-tech architecture.
It houses the Bibliothèque publique d'information, a vast public library, the Musée National d'Art Moderne which is the largest museum for modern art in Europe, and IRCAM, a centre for music and acoustic research. Because of its location, the Centre is known locally as Beaubourg. It is named after Georges Pompidou, the President of France from 1969 to 1974 who decided its creation, and was officially opened on 31 January 1977 by then-French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. The Centre Pompidou has had over 150 million visitors since 1977.
Other features of the neighbourhood include the Musée Picasso, the house of Nicolas Flamel, the Musée Cognacq-Jay, the Musée Carnavalet and the new and very popular Café Charlot.
