The Paris/Ile de France region

Paris is the capital and largest city in France, situated on the river Seine, in northern France, at the heart of the Île-de-France region (or Paris Region, French: Région parisienne). The city of Paris, within its administrative limits largely unchanged since 1860, has an estimated population of 2,193,031 (January 2007), but the Paris metropolitan area has a population of 11,836,970 (January 2007), and is one of the most populated metropolitan areas in Europe.

An important settlement for more than two millennia, Paris is today one of the world's leading business and cultural centres, and its influences in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities. In 2009 and 2010 Paris was ranked among the three most important and influential cities in the world, among the first three "European cities of the future" – according to research published by the Financial Times – and among the top ten most liveable cities in the world according to the British review Monocle. Paris also ranks among the 10 greenest European cities in 2010. Paris hosts the headquarters of many international organizations such as UNESCO, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the informal Paris Club.

Central Paris

Today's Marais

Steet artist reproducing Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring on the floor (2005).

From that day on, the Marais has been one of Paris' main localization for art galleries. Following its rehabilitation, the Marais have become a fashionable district, home to many trendy restaurants, fashion houses and hype galleries.

The neighbourhood has experienced a growing gay presence since the 1980s, as evidenced by the existence of many gay cafés, nightclubs, cabarets and shops. These establishments are mainly concentrated in the southwestern portion of the Marais, many on or near the streets Sainte-Croix de la Bretonnerie and Vieille du Temple.

The Marais is also known for the strong Chinese community it hosts. The history of the community has started during World War I. At that time, France needed workers to replace its at-war soldiers and China decided to send a few thousands of its citizens-at the one condition that they would not take part of the war. After the 1918's victory, some of them have decided to stay in Paris, specifically living around the current rue au Maire. Nowadays, mostly working in jewelery and leather-related products, the Marais' Chinese community has settled in the north of the district, particularly in the surrounding of Place de la République. Right next to it, on the rue du Temple, is the Chinese Church of Paris.

Other features of the neighbourhood include the Musée Picasso, the house of Nicolas Flamel, the Musée Cognacq-Jay, the Musée Carnavalet and the new and very popular Café Charlot.

"The RentParis folks were stupendous"

The apartment is in the 3rd arr. very close to the Marais and the Pompideau Center. It is fairly small but worked very well for us - parents and a 17-year old girl. The pullout sofa bed was quite com… More

"Mostly as represented, but very poor lighting and all those stairs would keep me from renting this one again!"

First, and possibly most important, the rental agency was terrific! That certainly helped a few issues! We had a bug issue - possibly flying ants or termites - which came through the lighting in the floor on the first night. I became aware of it when they began landing on me in bed. Although it took two visits, Jean-Pierre was quickly responsive and came up with a temporary solution which held them off for the rest of our week.

Be aware of the stairs. Yes, it is mentioned that there is no lift; however, it is not mentioned that the stairs are narrow, of differing heights and are winding so that you have to hug the outer wall if you are carrying your heavy suitcase down at the end of the week to keep from falling. Jean-Pierre carried our big suitcase up on the first day, so I didn't realize the difficulty of maneuvering until the end when he wasn't there! So just think about that.

All in all, the apartment is true to photos. But two things would keep me from renting again or recommending this apartment. The lighting is horrible in the one bathroom where the sink and shower are located. The lights are halogen and are behind you when you are at the sink (in the floor and ceiling - and they are small halogen bulbs). The one light over the sink is very dim. Even my 18 year old daughter could not see well, so I knew it wasn't my 50 year old eyes! This was very, very annoying. Also, the toilet closet is very, very tight. A slightly large person would have a difficult time sitting at the facilities with the sink and the tightness of the space between toilet and wall where your knees extend. Well, one might be able to sit, but getting up wouldn't be so easy. So, please keep this in mind. (btw, the lighting was great in there - but no mirror).

The second thing is no air conditioning. To be fair, no a/c is advertised. There is one fan which my daughter used in the living area for the sleeper sofa. But the pigeons (the strips did not keep them off my sill) and rain kept us from sleeping with the windows open (some bugs, but no big deal). It got hot and stuffy. And our highs were only in the mid 70s. So, summer heat would not be fun in this non-air conditioned apartment at night! No additional fan in the bedroom.

Next time, I would happily use this rental agency, but would look for a better apartment. The location was fine. I'm just happy to be in pretty much any arrondisement with single digits!!

Thanks Jean-Pierre!

Bonjour, Hello,

Thank you so much for the time you spend to write this review.
We do not know the origin of the small flying ants. strange. There are no termites Paris. it would be a disaster for the city. The majority of buildings in the city center have a wooden structure.
Jean-Pierre knew how to end their life :-(

I'm very happy that Jean Pierre did a good job. I will tell him.

We have other apartments with lift, in more modern buildings. It's true, the charm of the Marais (narrow wooden staircase, the floor tiles) is often in old buildings.

All our best,

Fabrice

"Fantastic - pretending to be a Parisian!"

WE loved the accommodation, very central, great amenities. Jean Pierre was fabulously helpful. Laundry issues (leaking washing machine) need urgent attention so as to stop annoying the neighbours. We loved the place and would recommend to anyone.

"This appartment is ideal, well situated, clean and affordable"

This was our third time in this appartment and we truly enjoyed it again. It is well situated, spacious, clean and very well appointed. The climb to the appartment is a little challenging but still easy even at 60! We recommend it

"Charming little place"

The apartment was really nicely done, the beds were very comfortable even the pull out sofa bed was amazingly comfortable. I wish they have sofa beds that comfortable in the states, if they do I've never experienced it. The host was very friendly and punctual to meet with us on arrival and very helpful in explaining everything. We had a wonderful time, definitely the way to travel instead of small hotel rooms when there are more than two travelers. Highly recommend it.
