The Paris/Ile de France region

Paris, for over 2000 years the cultural centre of Western Europe. Paris, the "city of light", home to the impressionists and where Picasso, Hemingway, Beckett and Joyce strode the streets and changed how we see the world. it has some of the finest art galleries and museums in the world. It is the home of haute couture fashion along with the most amazing shops for accessories.
It is a city where you can walk all day and not feel tired, visiting markets and book stores, private museums, sitting in the sidewalk cafes and the parks absorbing the movement of a city devoted to culture. It is impossible to name all the places of interest, there are so many it would take half a lifetime to even scratch the surface. If you have never been to Paris before, hurry, there is not a moment to lose.
The Central Paris / 9th / IXe area
The area around the apartment was known in the 19th century as "Little Athens" and could almost be described as the real birthplace of Impressionist painting. 100 metres up the street at Place Pigalle was the Cafe de la Nouvelle Athenes where painters such as Matisse, Degas and Van Gogh would meet and where the plan for the initial exhibition of Impressionist painters was hatched back in 1870. It's now an upmarket delicatessen.
In the lane across the road from the apartment lived Theo Van Gogh, Vincents brother, who played a pivotal role in supporting and encouraging Vincent for many years. Just around the corner at No. 16 rue Chaptal is the Musee de La Vie Romantique. The home of painter Ary Scheffer in the mid 19th century, his friends included the novelist Georges Sand and other visitors such as Liszt, Chopin and Dickens. It still has the original courtyard garden with a sweet little teahouse open to the public.
Down past Metro Saint Georges, where they filmed the embassy scenes in The DaVinci Code, you come to rue des Martyrs, a fresh food lovers paradise - check out Delmontel boulangerie and patisserie, one of the best in France. 10 minutes walk down rue Pigalle and past Trinite church is Galeries Lafayette and Printemps, the two major department stores in Paris, a daytrip in itself.
Continue on past and you come to Paris Opera and suddenly you are already at the Louvre. Above Place Pigalle is Montmartre and Scare Coeur Basilica where you can walk through the street market of rue Lepic, have lunch at Place du Tertre and watch the portrait sketchers and where everybody gathers to watch the sun set over Paris.

A really well-designed apartment for the space, fine for a couple, and we breakfasted/dined at table often in our 5-day royal-wedding avoiding break in Paris. We chose it because we love the area-close to Montmartre, but also the lively Rue de Martyrs-and because of the "balcony" with views of Eiffel tower & Sacre Coeur. Strictly speaking, there are views, but it is not really a "balcony", being on the 5th & floor, it's really a ledge with an open railing and only room for 2 narrow chairs & a tiny table. The picture on web suggests you can sit & drink wine and survey view. Well some people could, but I found it far too vertiginous for comfort, which was a great shame. Even if you are not fearful of heights, it's not really comfortable for a long lingering drink. We loved the vibey-lively area and easy walk to central sites and to our beloved Montmartre. Unfortunately, the apartment next door was undergoing major renovation, building a roof terrace we think, so on working days (the french did not have the royal wedding bank holidays) the noise started in earnest at 8.30. Also, we had to let the workmen know that plaster was raining onto the "balcony" and they did try to protect it then. but definitely a downside. The apartment owners were apparently not told of the work & offered us a free night if we returned. We had a lovely time and definitely better than a hotel, but not sure if we will return to this apartment, tho' definitely (again) to this area. |

"The local shops are terrific. We also love our "chic" hair colour and curl from Espace Coiffure a couple of doors down. And of course, the Piece de Resistance, the apartment itself. How wonderful it was to come home each day and relax in this little jewel. (We also appreciated having tea and coffee and other items available. Plus being able to phone home free was brilliant. Au Revoir" Yvonne and Cheryle, Melbourne Australia, Aug 09
"Wonderful location and every comfort. We have enjoyed our stay and hope to return for a longer stay in the not too distant future." Baard and Barbi, Melbourne Australia, Sep 09
