The Paris/Ile de France region
Paris is the city of a thousand clichés - the ‘City of Lights', and Hemingway's much quoted ‘Moveable Feast' amongst them, but for once it is also a city that justifies the hype. Paris is one of the world's truly great cities, a metropolis that lavishly satisfies the desires of tourists and business people alike and manages to retain a standard of living that makes becoming a Parisian so alluring.
Despite its large size and population, almost everything worth seeing is contained within the Boulevard Périphérique (the ring road). The compact centre is easily navigable on foot, with the efficient and comprehensive Métro system always within a couple of streets.
Central Paris / 16th / XVIe area
Many of Paris's poshest addresses are in this arrondissement which is home to foreign embassies, the wealthy, rich and famous. Situated on the right bank of the River Seine, this arrondissement – which includes the mainly residential districts of Auteuil and Passy – is also the location of the famous Avenue Foch, the widest street in Paris.
To the West is the famous Bois de Boulogne ... three times the size of New York's Central Park or London's Hyde Park, it is where Paris takes the famliy for picnics, bike rides and long leisurely walks on sultry summer evenings.
The 16th is home to the Trocadero with its fantastic views of the Eiffel Tower and across the centre of Paris. The flat itself is on the border of the 8th which is noted for the energy of its business life and the tourism hustle around the Arc de Triomphe and along the length of the Champs Elysees down to the Place de la Concorde, the Tuileries gardens and The Louvre ... a comforable one hour stroll down hill although it tends to take me two or three hours with all the shops, restaurants and cafes.
How to get there
The flat is an easy 5 minutes walk from the "Charles de Gaulle Etoile" Metro station (Lines 1,2 & 6 + RER A). We are approx 400 metres down Avenue Victor Hugo.
NB, the following three names all refer to exactly the same place which is where the "Charles de Gaulle Etoile" Metro station is located at the top of the Champs Elysees: - Arc de Triomphe - Place d'Etoile - Place Charles de Gaulle (but not to be confused with Charles de Gaulle airport!)
From Charles de Gaulle Airport: - Regional train line B from the airport to Chatelet les Halles. Then change on to RER A for 2 stops to Charles de Gaulle Etoile. Total journey time is 30 mins on RER A and a further 10 mins on RER B. The adult fare October 2009 was €8.30 one way. The taxi fare from CDG is around €50 if you're feeling flush, and may well take longer than the train,
If you arrive by Eurostar the easiest way is by taxi which should be no more than €12.50 including tip, although it can be a bit more expensive in heavy traffic.
