Palazzo Prestipino is located behind the historical market Ballarò, in via San Nicolò all'Albergheria, a few steps from Casa Professa, Piazza Pretoria and Piazza Vigliena (also known as “Quattro Canti” or “Teatro del Sole”).
Casa Alloro, fully restored, is on the first floor of the building, also accessed by elevator, and overlooking the courtyard through three balconies.
The philosophy of the house is based on the contemporary idea of living an open space, well divided at the same time, and on the perfect mixture of historic architecture and modern design's luxury that combines warmth and elegance.
The general atmosphere is still based on the contrasts taste where the elegance and the stylish design are opposed to the historic and popular substrate of the food market “Ballarò”.
The entire building, after being abandoned for years, has been recently renovated with a skilful work that has returned it to its ancient splendor.
It is a noble palace built on pre-existing architecture and through consolidations of ancient parts of the old town according with the historical architecture stratification in the old town of Palermo.
The oldest part is from the “Catalano” period (XIV-XV sec.) and it's recognizable in the stone arch which gives currently access to the “coffee shop”; a rediscovered fragment of the sixteenth century's stair is shown on the side of the courtyard. Precious sixteenth century's fragments lead back to the noble families that had lived in the palace during the past centuries.
The building has a typical pattern, very common in the Sicilian cultural context; the facade shows the development of the building on three levels: ground floor, main floor - “piano nobile” - and second floor, with rhythmic large openings and balconies aligned; the central balcony, supported by stone corbels, belongs together with the below stone entrance door.
The paintings and “stucco” decorations discovered, during restoration, in some of the ceilings and walls of the palace rooms belong to the late eighteenth century and nineteenth-century. The steps of the building's staircase are covered with a precious red marble from Trapani combined with a white marble.
As you walk out the front door you will find yourself immersed in the colors, smells and voices of one of city's oldest historic markets. Among the fruits colours and the fresh fish's sparkle, you will discover the marvels of Palermo's architecture!
On the ground floor you can enjoy an elegant food shop with prosciutto, cheese and other delicatessen and a restaurant that serves sicilian cuisine with a modern touch.
