About this location

The Sicily region

Sicily, right in the heart of the Mediterranean sea, has a cultural heritage unsurpassed by any other holiday destination. It's array of historical rulers have provided the island with unique architecture, art and traditions. The coastline is dramatic and beautiful (like the people) and the towns are a bustling hubbub of activities.

In the centre of the island sits the majestic Mt Etna, a still active volcano. A trip to the top is a must.

Being in Italy, and having such a rich history, Sicily has a wonderful selection of food & drink. The various cultures and natural local produce combine to make dishes that can be found nowhere else in the world.

Central Palermo

Streets and alleys of Palermo:

can't get enough of walking in Palermo. Staring at the varied architecture, listening to the clips of conversations (just the tone of them), smiling back to curious and friendly faces' and suddenly ' a flash of green wings and a scream of a parrot!

Market places:

just dive into a real dealing and get ready for making a fool of yourself ' and don't get it so seriously if you put your fingers to the wrong places and get some strict looks from the market salesmen.

Bar Touring

in Piazzetta Porta Reale (Via Lincoln): very friendly staff and 10+ Sicilian style 'snacks' like arancinos and pepitos etc.

We always try to make our guests happy and because of this quite often, they come back to our homes. This is also the case of this guest who now seems to be unhappy about us: last year she spent her holidays in one of the properties we manage and then came back (at that time she also enjoyed a free pick up from the central station to help her with luggage). I think that if we were so bad as portraited, she would be not so keen to stay in another property of ours. Sadly, I think that the origin of this harsh review is the failed attempt to get some financial compensation. Since many facts are simply not true or only partially true, we'd like to give our version:

1) we never changed our prices for taxi transfer which is 40 €. She asked for a 10 € discount. We explained that airport transfers have fixed prices 35-40-45 € depending on where you have to go. We also explained that the taxi coop offers to us a price which is 5 € less expensive than the standard price requested to reach the area where the apartment is located. We also said to be careful about 30 € offers because the job is done by drivers with no license. We kept the emails if anyone is curious about this story (written communication is in Italian because our guest is Italian; but during their staying, I had always to talk in English with her partner even when it could have been useful to speak Italian for a better understanding).
2) The pics are saying the truth about a flat - not luxurious but recently renovated and with a good value for money (our 3 adult guests paid for a week of late June 18 € person/day, included air con and wireless internet). In any case, we always send in advance a rental contract to be signed on arrival which says that if the pics and description are not correct you can refuse to confirm your staying without penalty. On arrival our guests said the apartment was nice. They did not complained the day after.
3) We do not use photo editing and if you look at the pictures there are several windows in the apartment. The bathroom has two small windows. No one had said there is a microwave, but there is an oven and the “ancient percolator” is a standard Moka machine (with the typical old Italian design). Some of our guests enjoyed medium term stayings so the small kitchen contains several utensils we provided and they bought. Anyway we always say: “if you need something else, we will be pleased to provide it”.
4) Tv accident: I was called and informed during the night (my phone is 24/24h switched on), I asked if our guests needed medical assistance or to go to the hospital. They said that they wanted to wait until the next morning to see if the leg would be better. They did not ask me to come at night. The next morning, I went and I insisted to send them to the first aid just for a check up, but they refused; they also said that they had an insurance but they did not want to use it, in spite I said that I could be a witness for any kind of interview, if needed. In the meantime, quite oddly, I was informed that I was talking to a lawyer and that the contract we had signed was wrong (strange: it is the standard Italian short term rental contract and they had received it weeks before). At the end a compensation issue sneaked into the conversation. Since the way to introduce it was so weird (as our guests says “we were trying to warn him to help him in future”), I thought I had not well understood, so I asked “which kind of compensation do you mean: about the television!?”). In fact, I was really sorry about what had happened but I did not apologize since it was totally clear that the accident was not due to any negligence from my side (the tv was not working because they had switched off the decoder, the floor is not slippery because it is laminate parquet, the trolley legs were not broken so it was not a problem of its structure; being the tv-set heavy and the trolley with wheels, as the guest in fact says, you had to push it quite strongly to make it fall down!). Anyway I did not care about the damaged tv, so I said: “no problem about it, let's think about the leg”. But since no one wanted to see a doctor and the leg was already bettering, as I had been told, the discourse came back to the dangerous tv and to the compensation issue. Rude insistence about my supposed faults kept going but I kept being kind, and asked: “do you want the tv be repaired?” “yes, we do. It would be very kind of you”. The same morning I brought the tv-set to a repair shop and it was back home working again within few hours. A couple of days later, we met downstairs in the street and the lady was apparently walking with no problems and also her old mother – always very kind to me - said in Italian “now it is ok” (probably because the lawyer was not there...).
6)Normally check in is at 2 pm, check out at 11 am. If we do not have a check-in in the same day, our guests can stay until late without additional costs. If we have guests coming the same day, we anyway allow to leave the luggage in the flat while it is cleaned up. This is what I told my guests this time also. So when we received a last minute reservation, we asked them to let the cleaning lady get in at 11 am because other guests were checking in the same day. At this point, I received a phone call by the husband-lawyer that informed me he did not care about the check-out procedures and that they were not checking out before 5 pm. To make it clearer, he used also some swear-word. I explained that the cleaning lady could not start working so late because the next guests were supposed to check in at 2 pm. Nothing! They simply told me they did not care. I told that it was not fair, that I did not agree and that I was forced to accept that situation and verbal violence against my will. I felt really helpless. Before, I never had to deal with so unpleasant guests. They left at 5pm as they wanted, leaving an incredibly dirty apartment behind them, as they had done last year. Luckily, the next guests were so kind to understand and wait until 9.30 pm before checking-in.

"Incredible flat. Even more incredible hospitality."

I stayed in this flat for nearly 2 months with two other friends of mine during the summer of 2012. We found it online emailed the owner. We were immediately emailed back with all the information we needed to make our decision. We had a million questions but the owners were EXTREMELY helpful, answering all of our questions and going out of their way to make sure we were well advised considering this was the first time any of us had been to Italy. The owners speak perfect English which was very helpful for us considering none of us spoke Italian.

When we arrived, we took a bus from the airport that drops you off a few blocks from the flat (very convenient). We were met by the landlords and taken to the flat. The flat literally has everything you need for a long stay. We cooked for ourselves for two months and only had to purchase food. Spices, pots, pans, cleaning supplies, plates, cups, bed sheets, and plenty of towels were all provided for us.
The flat was airconditioned which is almost essential for Palermo during summer. The flat was spotless and everything seemed brand new or recently renovated. The area was nicely lit at night and seemed very safe to me. There are 2 groceries stores about 2 blocks from the flat so getting groceries and walking home is no trouble. Also there are bus stops a block or two from the flat. There are plenty of coffee shops and restaurants on the same block as the apartment, and la champagneria (the social center of Palermo) is only a 15-20 min walk away.

I could go on and on about the flat itself, but the best part of this flat is the ownership. The owners, continuously went out of their way to make sure we were well adjusted to being in Italy for the first time and helped us out a lot. They were by far the nicest and most friendly people I met during my two months in Palermo! They are honest and genuinely good-hearted people.
