Hampton Court Palace
This is the story of two palaces: a Tudor palace, magnificently developed by Cardinal Wolsey and later Henry VIII, alongside a baroque palace built by William III and Mary II. 1514 was a very important date in the history of Hampton Court This was the year that a new 99-year lease on the property was given, by the Knights Hospitallers, to Thomas Wolsey (c1470-1530), the Archbishop of York who would later become a cardinal. Much of Henry VIII's fame comes from his many marriages, but he was also an enthusiastic palace builder In just ten years Henry VIII spent more than £62,000 rebuilding and extending Hampton Court. Palace hightlights: Henry VIII's Kitchens; The Chapel Royal; Hampton Court Palace gardens; The Great Vine; Costumed guided tours; The Maze; Great Hall.
Kew Gardens
Set in 300 acres beside the banks of the River Thames, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew,has much to see all year round. Guided walking tours are available, but those wishing to wander by themselves can see the arboretum, water features, rock garden, pagoda, the world's largest and most famous Glass House, the Palm House and the Temperate House.
The Central London/Zone 2 / Battersea area
With over 2,500 trains passing through the Clapham Junction on a daily basis, the station is one of busiest in the country. As a result of the frequent links both in and out of the city centre, Clapham Junction has become a popular place for people to live. The popular Northcote Road is a good place to visit. Northcote Road is famous for its host of bars, restaurants and eateries which almost exclusively offer great quality choices. On Saturdays there is a fabulous market, home to small delis, clothing boutiques and high-end street stalls selling fresh bread, stunning bouqets and tasty meats and olives amongst other things.
Nearby, 10 minute walk lies the beautiful Battersea Park which was founded and opened by Queen Victoria in 1858. The 200 acre park lies on the bank of the Thames and offers brilliant views of Chelsea. There is a boating lake, bowling green and children’s playground. Victoria is easy accessibility arriving by train from Clapham Junction, a ten minute train journey.
