The South East England / London region
LONDON!!! - cosmopolitan, diverse and exciting - where history and culture collide with you at every point- jump the tube (that's the metro/subway in our British lingo!) and explore the historic sights of the Tower of London with the Crown Jewels and Tower Bridge. Jump on the top of a double decker bus and enjoy the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben at Westminister, Covent Garden, Picadilly Circus, and St Paul's Cathedral; take a trip on the London Eye with its panoramic views across London; or a river taxi down the Thames to Greenwich craft market, the Cutty Sark and the Meridien Time Line; or how about some shopping at some of our world famous stores such as Harrods, Hamleys Toy Shop, Selfrides and Harvey Nicholls or a trip for the young and old to Madame Tussards and the Planetarium...and that's just for starters. And of course, the Kings Road is a short walk from the apartment, as is the Charles Saatchi Gallery located there. If you are coming from May, then there's the Royal Chelsea Flower Show (24-28 May 2011), Queens Club Tennis (June 2012 ), Wimbledon (20 June - 3 July 2011), Ascot horse races, and International cricket and rugby matches.
If it's culture you want, there are no shortage of West End Theatre shows, opera and ballet at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, international art exhibitions at the National Art Gallery and National Portrait galleries in Trafalgar Square, The Tate Modern on the Thames, and the many world class museams such as the British Museum and Victoria and Albert (V &A) Museum which house many of the spoils of Britain's colonial past.
For children and young people, there's the superb Natural History Museum for dinosaurs and Darwin, the Science Museum where you can fly like superman or learn something new through their many exciting interactive exhibitions, or the London Dungeons for a trip into London's sordid past! Come summer, London's parks open up to concerts and open air festivals showcasing the best of British pop music, or take a river taxi to the O2 concert halls in Greenwich to see a big band if you are lucky.
Dont forget to take a break, and enjoy a picnic in one of the many London parks - Hyde Park, Green Park, St James Park, open air theatre in Regents Park, Zoo and Canal and open air opera in Holland Park. And explore the markets - Spitalfields, Columbia Flower Market, Covent Garden, Portobello Road.
If you want to slow things down a bit, why not take a day trip by train from Battersea Park station (change at Clapham Junction - 1 hour journey) to Brighton on the South Coast, or Portsmouth, home of Britain's naval history. Alternatively, sample the historic English towns of Oxford, Cambridge and Winchester which are all within 45 minutes of London. Trains, and coaches(from Victoria) run regularly between London and all parts of the country, so it's easy to use the flat as a base to explore other parts of England that grab your fancy. We can't guarantee the British weather, but come rain or shine, one thing is for definite - this is one holiday you won't be short of things to do!
