The South East England / Greater London region
There is no such thing as out-of-season in London and you can have an excellent holiday here at any time of year. You can visit world class tourist attractions such as the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, St Paul's Cathedral, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, The Mall, Trafalgar Square, London Eye and the British Museum.
Or you can go shopping in Oxford Street, Regent Street, Covent Garden, Carnaby St, Knightsbridge (Harrods, Harvey Nichols), trendy Camden Market (pleasant 20 min stroll along the canal) or the antiques market in nearby Islington (10 min walk).
Heading East, you can wander around the City of London, Europe's financial centre with its famous buildings (St Paul's Cathedral, the Gherkin, Tower Bridge, Wren churches) and visit the medieval Tower of London. Buckingham Palace, St James' Park, Hyde Park and Notting Hill are a short bus or tube ride to the West.
There is so much to see and experience in the metropolis; art galleries, theatres, clubs, rock and pop concerts, classical music performances, jazz clubs, comedy clubs, cinema, sporting events - there is an ever changing variety of things to do. The house has an A-Z map book, some guide books and restaurant guides to help you get the most out of your stay in central London as well as a considerable library of books, videos and dvds.
Central London/Zone 1 / St Pancras area
St Pancras is a lively, bustling area with many restaurants, bars and cafes including the longest champagne bar in Europe (in the gothic St Pancras International station). You will find a guide to local restaurants and shops in the house.
The area has seen a great deal of development in recent years and visitors who remember Kings Cross-St Pancras from days gone by will be surprised at its transformation. Victorian canalside warehouses have been restored to house new apartments, restaurants and bars and crumbling industrial buildings have been swept away to make way for new hi-tech offices, shops, art galleries (including the cutting-edge Gagosian Gallery) and Kings Place, a new concert hall that is home to the London Sinfonietta and offers concerts and cultural events nightly. The area also boasts three off-West End theatres; the Shaw Theatre, Bloomsbury Theatre and The Place theatre.
The British Library is a 5 minute walk away - treasures include Mozart scores, Beatles lyrics, Shakespeare First Folio and Magna Carta (1215). You can stroll to the British Museum in Bloomsbury in 20 mins (Egyptian Mummies, Rosetta Stone, Elgin Marbles). Bloomsbury is also home to the Charles Dickens Musuem, sited in the house where he wrote Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickelby.
Despite these local highlights, the best reason for living in St Pancras is its proximity to London's West End. You can walk to Covent Garden, Oxford Street or Leicester Square in 30-40 mins or take a 10 min bus or tube ride. This means that you spend more of your holiday doing what you want to do, rather than commuting in to central London on the trains or tubes.
If you are planning on visiting other areas of the UK, St Pancras makes an excellent base as it is now Europe's largest transport hub. You can be in Paris in 2.5 hours, Cambridge in 1 hour, York in 3 hours or Edinburgh in 5 hours. Just walk round the corner and get on a train.
How to get there
This Victorian family house is a 5 minute walk from St Pancras International Station which has Eurostar train services to Paris, Brussels and beyond. Heathrow Airport, Luton Airport, Gatwick Airport, Stansted Airport and City Airport are all within easy reach by train or tube/subway (allow 60 mins to Heathrow and 90 to the rest) and we'll send directions when you book. If you want a day out of London take a national train from St Pancras or Kings Cross stations and for local trips either use St Pancras London Underground station (6 tube lines) or one of the many buses which stop at the end of the street (10 mins to Oxford Street). Bloomsbury and Russell Square are a short walk as are the restaurants, bars and antiques market at Angel Islington. The West End, Covent Garden, Soho and Oxford Street are a pleasant 25 minute walk.

Guestbook for Luxury London Townhouse For 8
"Home from home (only nicer!) "This is a beautiful home, beautifully decorated and filled with books you want to read and films you want to watch. The immaculate kitchen is a joy to cook and entertain in, and at the end of the day you can relax in the stylish bathroom listening to music as you lie in the huge free-standing bath. The 'secret garden' was a big hit with all of us (2 adults, 1 five-year old, 1 two- year old) and our kids very happily ended up having picnics and playing hide and seek with the neighbours' children. Our friends (who live up the road) definitely wanted to move in!
If you can tear yourself away, you have the whole of London on your doorstep. Good local places to eat out and a Tesco Metro only a few metres down the road mean you won't go hungry and and the excellent transport links make getting around a doddle.
When we had a problem with the DVD not working, the owner couldn't have been more charming or helpful and within 24 hours he'd brought round and set up a replacement. The cleaner was also very efficient and pleasant.” M Joinson, Dorset, England (September 2008)
“Thank you for a lovely place that we could stay in with our family. We enjoyed every moment of it. We will remember this in South Africa and tell our friends with big families about it” – The Kampers (October 2008)
"What a wonderful place to stay. What a great city to visit. We all want to come back of course, definitely" Martin Eckhardt, Bremen, Germany (October 08)
You have a wonderful house. Thanks a lot for a lovely stay" Kristin Fenton, Tromso, Norway (November 08)
"We enjoyed our stay immensely and our favourite thing was the convenience of the tube and railway. The rooms were perfect for us and there were so many amenities. We appreciated the wonderful internet access (which was MUCH better than the hotels and allowed us to prepare for our many days of sightseeing). It was a lovely house and had absolutely everything we needed. Thank you for a wonderful stay.’" Kari Lubitz & family, Portland, Oregon, USA (November 08)
''It looks just like the web pictures - great! We've been at home in Balfe Street, London. Great linen, wonderful kitchen. It was a pity we've been too busy to use the steam room. We love the way the English people look after their old houses and furniture. Well done! Kindest regards, Family Wuhrmann-Otero, Madrid (August 2008)
