Description: This is one of the most exclusive and elegant areas of the city and the home of many famous people.
In the north of the district is the elegant area of Knightsbridge that overlooks Hyde Park and is home to one of the most famous department stores in the world Harrods as well as numerous exclusive and world-famous designer shops. Chelsea is also well-known for its football team, with home base at local stadium Stamford Bridge, located in the nearby borough of Fulham. The district was made famous by Londons aristocracy and high class Bourgeoisie almost from its very beginnings as the home of Queen Elizabeth I before she was crowned. The Kings Road was born as the route chosen by Charles II to ride on horseback to Hampton Court and a few centuries later once again became a Bohemian centre and a regular meeting point for the artists and intellectuals of the day. It was in fact where the Chelsea School of Art was founded in 1895.
At the end of the XIX century communication with the south of the city was improved with the construction of Battersea Bridge. Following the Second World War some of Chelseas largest buildings were used to house the Embassies for a number of different countries and non-governmental organizations.
The district briefly shone once again in the decades of the 1960s and 1970s when members of the groups the Beatles and Rolling Stones such as Brian Jones, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards chose the area as their home, whilst it also saw the birth of British Punk music.
