Description: The City of London is the financial district and the location of the head quarters to the most important offices and banks in the city. It is also simultaneously one of the most modern and yet most traditional areas of London; a fact that is very much apparent in its architecture.

The view from Waterloo Bridge allows visitors to appreciate the perfect balance between immense modern buildings such as St. Mary Axe (better known as the Gherkin because of its shape!) and to the west the London of always with its Victorian houses, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.

The area was also victim to a number of tragedies including the Great Fire that destroyed the whole city in 1666, and later the relentless bombing of the Second World War. Many buildings were constructed in the post-war era and form a part of the continuous contemporary urban development.

There are many characteristic buildings in the City such as Lloyds Palace and the Tower 42, that was the tallest building in the United Kingdom until 1990.

The district is also home to the beautiful St. Pauls Cathedral that was built on the foundations of a church that was destroyed by the great fire of 1666. Finished in 1710 it actually boasts the second largest dome in the world (after Saint Peters in Rome). It is possible to climb the 530 steps and appreciate a quite unique panoramic view over London. The cathedral has been witness to a number of important events such as the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana and the funeral of Winston Churchill. Alongside the Cathedral, St. Helens church is considered another of the most beautiful buildings in the area.

A visit to the Tower of London is absolutely essential. It dates back to the Middle Ages and over the centuries has been used as a Fortress, arsenal, royal palace and prison for nobles and some of the most noteworthy political characters in history. The Tower was named a UNESCO World Heritage site.

In the same area visitors can see the Monument erected by Christopher Wren to commemorate the Great Fire of 1666.
