Description: This district located on Londons south bank is one of the oldest areas of the city. Recent excavations have revealed prehistoric activity in this part of London: agriculture, burial mounds and ritual sites. It was originally a series of islands in the river Thames and due to its strategic position became an important part of the ancient Londinium during the Roman period. Abandoned after the fall of the Roman empire the area did not recover until the rule of King Alfred in 886 ad and from this moment onwards continued to grow and encompass the city, officially becoming a part of London from 1550.

The Cathedral of Southwark is one of many attractions in the area as one of the oldest buildings in the capital. Certain historic sources trace its original structure back to a X century Augustine convent, although the original structure dates back to 1106. It is located on the southern banks of the River Thames. It is a wonderful site for walking, and offers a fabulous panoramic view with its elegant sand-coloured stone. This area of the city also offers a number of culinary options centred around the famous Borough Market ; an authentic Victorian scene open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays. It is believed that the market dates back to 1276. Nowadays it is still famous for offering some of the best specialties of British cuisine.

Like the rest of the city the area is well communicated as the home of one of Londons most important stations Waterloo Station. Since 1848 it has been one of the busiest in England.

It is possible to walk here from the City across the River Thames and over the Millenium Bridge, a completely pedestrian suspension bridge that leads to the Globe Theatre, the Bankside Gallery and the Tate Modern Art Gallery.
