The South East England region

Whether you arrive in London by tube, by train, inside one of the city's ubiquitous black cabs or on the top of a double decker bus, you'll immediately realise that although this city has been around for nearly 2000 years and has a deep sense of history, it retains a youthful exuberance and unique vibrancy that's hard to beat.

Today's London promises something for everyone and almost inevitably, it delivers. There are unmissable galleries and museums, most of which, amazingly, are completely free, as well as a treasure trove of unique and quirky hidden gems which are just waiting to be discovered. Don't forget either, that the glorious parks and gardens covering this greenest of capital cities are also free to explore, and we haven't yet touched on music, theatre or the arts, much less the astounding array of shopping opportunities, or the resurgence in British gastronomy with no less than 5 Michelin starred restaurants to chose from... need we go on!

So come to London and no matter what the weather, sun, rain, wind, snow (and you might get all of them in one day)... it doesn't matter - you're going to love it!

Central London/Zone 1

Covent Garden is a district in London between St. Martin's Lane and Drury Lane. It is associated with the former fruit and vegetable market in the central square and is divided by Long Acre, with independent shops centred on Neal's Yard and Seven Dials to its north, while the south contains the central square with its street performers and most of the elegant buildings, theatres and entertainment facilities, including the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, and the London Transport Museum.

It's now a major tourist location containing cafes, pubs, small shops, and a craft market called the Apple Market, along with another market held in the Jubilee Hall. Street entertainment at Covent Garden was noted in Samuel Pepys's diary in May 1662, when he recorded the first mention of a Punch and Judy show in Britain. Performers today audition for timetabled slots in a number of venues around the market. The courtyard space is dedicated to classical music only. There are street performances every day of the year, except Christmas Day. Shows run throughout the day and are about 30 minutes in length.

Covent Garden has 13 theatres and over 60 pubs and bars. The Harp in Chandos Place has received several awards, including London Pub of the Year in 2008. The Lamb & Flag in Rose Street has a reputation as the oldest pub in the area with the first mention of a pub on the site in 1772. It acquired a reputation for staging bare-knuckle prize fights during the early 19th century when it earned the nickname of the "Bucket of Blood". Incidentally and on a lighter note, the tube journey from Leicester Square to Covent Garden is at 300 yards, the shortest in London!
