"The Dordogne is for many people the picture-perfect image of the French countryside, a gentle landscape of patchwork firels, hiltop towns, turreted masions and jade-green woods. The Dordogne is famous for its stunning cave paintings as well as for its many fortified chateaux and bastide towns, reminders of the bollody battles waged her during the middle ages and he hundred years war"
The Cenac / St Julien de Cenac area
Cenac/Domme is well positioned for exploring the chief sights of the Dordogne valley, with its amazing castles, stunning gardens and breathtaking views all within a 5 mile drive. This beautiful town is at the top of the hill from our picturesque village house.
About Domme :
"On the edge of a cliff, Domme offers a vast panorama over the Dordogne valley. Enclosed by walls, this bastide village founded by Philip the Bold in 1283, tells of its glorious past through its fortified gates and towers, where Knights Templar were once imprisoned. The visitor will also discover the consuls’ and the goldsmiths’ houses, the old covered market and the governor’s hotel. Domme offers the green luxury of its suspended gardens above the Dordogne valley.
“Domme is a dream. It is a perfect little town, beautiful at first sight, even more beautiful when being visited and explored. Anyone would wax lyrical about it and for beauty it beggars description. It stands like a jewel in golden stone, on a tall hill, overlooking a switchback, winding road that heaves itself up through a just wide enough gateway and into the outer square of the town.” (Neal Lands “History, People and places in the Dordogne”).
The village has two bakeries a butcher, cave (wine bar), fresh fruit and veggie shop and a cake and sweets shop. So a quick stroll every morning will get you your fresh croissants and baguettes, meat, fruit and veg and treats for the day

The house is located in a small village that has a supermarket, 2 * Boulangeries, 2 * butchers, chemist, fresh produce shops, post office and 3 or 4 hotels with restaurants. The house itself has all the amenities that you would need to be self contained if you want to cook at home. It also has satellite TV so you can catch up on the News in English. The house is comfortable and clean and has great views across the mountains. It is ideally located within walking minutes of the village and a walled city - Domme and the Dordogne river. You can hire canoes at the river. We were there for 2 weeks and spent each day driving to different attractions and we didn't have enough time to do it all! We would definitiely use the house again if we went back to the area. Response: Thanks for the lovely review, hope to see you again soon. |

Stayed for a week early in the season. After a slight hiccup because I did not bring the address we found this lovely cottage in Cenac. Until next time. |

House is situated within village of Cénac and an easy walk to all shops and facilities including the weekly market (Tuesday am) which is a must. Adequately equipped kitchen and laundry mean that you can eat in (on the small terrace watching the sunset) and keep your washing up-to-date; or visit one of the local bar/bistros; or walk up to Domme to eat at one of the restaurants there. The owners provided two bikes which made cycling along the river valley relatively easy and more enjoyable than driving... We rode to Daglan and back (35km) and Beynac (18km). Cénac is a great base for taking a canoe trip down the Dordogne; hot-air ballooning from La Roque Gageac; or short drives (Sarlat, Montpazier, Montfort, Limieul...) or further afield. The house is well equipped with wi-fi Internet and TV although we never switched it on.. Spacious main room and bedrooms provide plenty of room to move about - no danger of claustrophobia! We stayed for 11 nights but we'll be back for a fortnight next time around... Response: Thanks for the great review, hope to see you again soon. |
