The Catalunia region
Castel d'Escales is 8 km from the medieval, picturesque small city of Girona (frequently named one of the loveliest towns in Spain) and 30mins to the Costa Brava's best golden-sand beaches, idyllic secluded coves, and authentic fishing villages.
The castle is 90mins north of the Catalan capital city of Barcelona with its vibrant modernist architecture and Gaudi masterpieces, 30mins to the world-famous Salvador Dali museum at Figueras, and less than one hour from the French border.
Local favourites include botanical gardens perched on cliffs overlooking the sea with exceptional views of the rugged coastline, archaeological Greco-Roman ruins at Empuries, and the beautiful, historic village of Besalù with its 12th century Romanesque bridge.
Recommended: Linger with a glass of cava and some tapas at a cafe on Girona's Plaça Major, watch the turquoise Mediterranean while savoring a relaxed yet elegant lunch of fish freshly caught that morning, forage for fresh, intensely flavored local ingredients, produce and other treasures at open-air markets, and taste pure passion in a bottle at a family-owned winery steeped in ancient wine-making traditions dating from the 14th century.
Celrà is an authentic working-class village within walking distance to the castle with bakeries, butcher, fishmonger (fresh local meat and fish), small grocer, church, sports bar/tabac that serves good tapas, and a weekly open-air market on Friday. Each day of the week a different village or town throughout the area holds an open-air market; many are exceptional.
Girona's ancient, picturesque Old Town is captivating with more than 1,000 years of architectural and cultural history mixed in with stylish and interesting shops, cafes, and museums. Its pedestrian-only, cobblestone streets are perfect for leisurely strolls and the gothic Cathedral, Arab baths, and important medieval Jewish quarter are all well worth a visit. You can also walk around the crenellated walls surrounding the historic center. They've withstood more than 30 sieges over 800 years and offer stunning views outside the city as well as quiet gardens and cloisters inside the fortress walls.
Superb restaurants are only 15mins from the castle including two top destinations for foodies in Girona: the Roca brothers' El Celler de Can Roca, named Best Restaurant in the World 2015 and 2013, and Rocambolesc Gelateria, Jordi Roca's Willy Wonka-inspired ice cream shop (try the hot ice cream-filled brioche bun). Or savor excellent freshly caught seafood and shellfish at a restaurant on the beach. Our gourmet cook is on hand to recommend the best restaurants in the area and assist with making reservations.
