LA BARONNERIE - private pool
£760–£1800 / week
About the home
La Baronnerie is a typical Poitevin-house with a practical holiday interior and many original features like exposed beams and a flagstone entrance. It is spacious and ideal for families with children or for adults favouring a more laid-back holiday experience and on the outlook for an ideal starting point for visiting interesting places like Cognac, Bordeaux , the Dordogne valley or who would like to visit the Medoc wine region by taking the ferry from Royan . Closeby smaller villages are waiting to be explored offering market days with fresh local products, bistrots and a life far away from hectic and stress.
The property , set in 5000 m2 , is located in a small hamlet between 2 historical towns(Celles andMelle) and it takes just about 1hrs drive to the atlantic coast and the lovely medieval town of La Rochelle and the Ile of Re.
It offers access to roman architecture, authentic french way of life, leisure centres (lake - horsebackriding - golf etc.) and local events in the second sunniest regions of France. The Poitou-Charentes region is also ideal for walking and cycling and sunflower fields or other might be just one of the items if you like painting.
For a day out many centers of interest (Bordeaux and Medoc vineyards,St. Emilion wine growers ,Loire valley chateaux, Dordogne with Perigord foie gras -truffels-mushrooms products, the Atlantic coastline with lovely sandy beaches and/or oysterfields etc.etc.) are easily accessible and promise to enhance your holiday. Should one day out not be sufficient - reasonably priced accommodation for one or two extra nights close to your favourite excursion spot are usually not difficult to be found. The english-speaking owners are at hand with hints and information , glad to be able to help in planning visits or stays or attend to any queries you might have.
Back on the premises the lower garden provides afternoon shade to the sound of a small water feature, whereas the pool area will stay sunlit till late evening. Enjoy the Mediterranean touch and ,when in season , help yourself to organic fruit in our orchard above the pool area, (apples, pears, plums, figs, hazelnuts, cherries, kiwis) Up there is also a small field where boys can kick their football or enjoy any other ball games.
This is the perfect place to laze around the big pool at your entire private use unless you prefer to participate in activities proposed by the local tourist office or by local enterprises (guided tours, horse back riding exploring the botanical path with fit par cours, etc.) Whatever your day has been like, the built-in barbecue in the pool area is definetly part of the outdoor living philosophy in its most agreable way.
Look at the swallows hover over the pool at dusk whilst getting your chops on the grill and enjoy the timeless atmosphere in a still very safe countryside-setting.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Deux Sevres region

Known as the second sunniest region of France the climate here is generally mild and agreeable and in addition to the classical summer season June and September have proved to be amongst the most wonderful months.
being located in the south of Deux-Sèvres there are many places of interest - the classic roman architecture present in nearly every small town, the historical past between catholics and protestants, small chateaux and
quiet waterarms - all this contributes to the authentic France feeling.
Also one of the routes of Jaques de Compostelle led through Melle, where you can also visit silver mines. Those had their importance during the reign of French kings for producing coins. Many cultural events take place especially during the season (concerts, expositions, flea markets, (open air)theatre etc:etc) We have our own Venise ,called Marais Poitevin - just 10 minutes away from Niort - where you can take boat-trips and explore the many waterarms rimmed by trees - leading you into a world of silence and quietude.
Niort is a lovely small town -busy and bustling, but not yet overcrowded by tourists - with a good market on saturday, but also tuesday and thursday: All the surrounding little villages have their specific market day. The closeness to the coast provides plenty of fish and lovely seafood ( oysters, mussels, prawns) at more than reasonable prices but amongst other food fantastic goat cheese from local places will tempt you to the glass of red that goes with it.
For children there are quite a few zoos (Mouton-Village, Zoo de Chizé, Zoo de la Palmyre, Valée de Singes ) to visit
The Celles sur Belle area
Celles and Melle are only a few miles from each other.
Close to Celles there is ' Plan de Lambon', an artificial lake (small entrance fee) as a fantastic alternative to the pool for children as it has playgroundspedalo-boats and a small sandy beach.Celles itself offers its abbey and gardens, public pool, tourist office and guided tours. bakery and a few other shops and restaurants.
Sometimes horse jumping competitions take place on abbey-grounds.
Melle is bigger and provides 3 supermarkets and one discount (Aldi) - the latter being closer and the most convenient to our property. Market day=Friday. With its 3 churches, the silver-mines, a botanic fitness path leading around town, a motorcycle museum, a horseriding centre and apart from shops, the tourist office etc. Bakeries, banks, drug stores, post-office, shops and restaurants are all in place.
St. Roman les Melle is only 2kms from La Baronnerie - its a tin y spot, but you can get your bread for breakfast there, the local pub does meals at lunchtime and serves as an outlet of one of Melle's supermarkets
Local activities like fairs, car boot sales, riding, fishing in lakes and rivers, cycling, horseback-riding, playing tennis, golfing are all available and details can be obtained whilst here.
