The Sicily region

Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, famous for its breathtaking scenery, wonderful locally produced food and its incredibly friendly people. In the east towers Etna, standing at 3,320m (10,900ft) high, it's one of the world's tallest and most active volcanoes. The beautiful Aeolian Islands are to the north and are reachable by boats which leave the small port of Cefalu daily during the summer season.

Sicily is a truly year round holiday destination. If you are a beach lover then the long summer season will be ideal for you. If mountain excursions, walks or cycling trips are more your thing, then the warm sunny spring and autumn seasons will be the ideal time. Winter sports enthusiasts can ski on the slopes of both Etna and Piano Battaglia (nr Cefalu), in the winter months from December to February.

Sicily has been the golden heart of the Mediterranean from early time, many people invaded the island from Phoenician to Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, and Spanish……leaving behind monuments and treasures to remind us of the past. The diversity can be seen in the different areas the Island of Morzia one of the oldest Phonecian settlements, Segeste, Selinunte, Valley of the Temples in Agrigento and Siracusa with its major Greek influence. In Palermo we have the perfect example of the Norman period with the Monreale cathedral. In the centre one of the most important villas during the Roman period is Roman Casale at Piazza Amerina.

In January, in the deep midwinter the average temperatures on the coast should still be hovering around the 10 deg.C . By February – March the days are starting to get warmer, although conditions in the mountains are still very wintery but along the coast winter is truly over.

April the wild flowers begin to truly explode all over Sicily and on the coast the first bathers start taking to the waters. The interior is spectacular, with the mountain slopes exploding in colour and the temperatures ideal for walking. By May the temperatures on the coast and in the islands will now be extremely comfortable.

June the first feel of summer by July the sea is the focus of the majority of tourist, the temperature is perfectly, at times quite hot.

August is the hottest month, Italian holiday time, people go the coast which become quite crowded.

September: Temperatures remain very comfortable everywhere, and the coast and islands retain that summer feeling, but without the crowds.

October is the most beautiful periods for country walking. Seasonal rainfalls help develop an astonishing variety of mushrooms.

The highest rainfall is generally in the month of November though the big storms that often sweep the Italian peninsula

In December the temperatures are around 10°C still have extremely agreeable temperatures during the days, though the sunlight hours are clearly at their lowest of the year.

Cefalu

Cefalu is less than an hour's drive along the coast, east of Sicily's capital Palermo. It has long been one of Sicily's most beautiful and popular resorts. Walking through the historic centre of the town you will discover charming cobbled streets lined with interesting local shops and excellent restaurants. At its heart, in the town's main square, stands the imposing Norman cathedral built in 1132 by King Roger 2nd. The huge image of Christ Pantocrator in the cathedral's apse is remarkable. Close-by, the long stretch of sandy beach is popular with both locals and tourists, and as the sun sets over the sea, the promenade comes alive for the evening passegiata. Cefalu is not just a seaside resort, but also makes a convenient base from which to explore the interior of the island. A short drive away is the Madonie National Park, with its breathtaking mountain landscapes and picturesque hill-top villages, perfect for walking and cycling, and even for skiing in the winter months.

"We had a perfect stay at Casa Della Pergola at Sant Ambrogio."

The house was perfect for the two of us. The balcony was great. Always breakfast outside under the sun. If we had any questions they were answered immediately. What we had red before about the Casa on the internet came totally true. Contacts with people in the village were great. Cefalu only 7 km away. A lot of nice places to visit in the vicinity.

The last 200 mtrs to the Case are pretty steep. Only small or special cars can reach the house. Mostly you will have to use your muscular strengh to bring your luggage to the house.

"Nydelig utsikt!"

Helt fin leilighet med utsikt over Cefalu og havet. Balkongen er veldig smal, men har plass til stoler. Leiligheten ligger nære stranden, men trappene dit er mange og lange. Dessuten må man gå over… More

"Geat little apartment"

Great little apartment in a lovely little village with excellent views - we went here for our honeymoon. Convenient small shop and cheap ice cream near by as well as a good small family restaurant. The beach was quiet and the sea gorgeous. All basic cooking equipment was provided and it was very clean, appearing exactly how it did in the photos. An excellent folder of information about Sicily and the surrounding area was provided in the property including details of restaurants, supermarkets, beaches, walks, routes to drive and much more. The only minor negative is that there are only fans not full air conditioning, however they were adequate for a hot early september. I would highly recommend it, especially as the price is very reasonable.
